I have just booked Molly in for her second injection today and she is just 10 weeks old, no comment was made on the phone so I'm now wondering if I will be told to come back at 12 weeks.  The breeder said she could have her second jab at 10 weeks and, like you, I am longing to be able to take her out and put her on the ground and not worry about other dogs being around!  Perhaps your vet just prefers to give the second jab at 12 weeks? Or I might be sent home this afternoon with no jab!

It seems some vets do them at 10 weeks and some at 12 weeks

We were told they can have the first injection anytime after 7 weeks, but the second cannot be given until 12 weeks

Teddy had his first jabs at exactly 9 weeks, but we were told he can't have his 2nd before he's exactly 12 weeks. (next Wednesday).

What's the opnion on how long you have to wait after 2nd jabs before going out?

Re waiting to go out after second jabs -

Our breeder said 'wait a couple of days'.

Our doggy loving neighbour said 'take him out immediately, what's the chances of him coming across an unvaccinated dog?'

Our vet said 'wait for 2 weeks'.

In the end, we waited for 10 days and he's been absolutely fine.

Hope this helps somewhat!

The best advise is to ask your Vet. He will know which vaccine he has given and how long the immunity will take to build up. I would not chance taking your pup out "immediately" after the 2nd jab. His body will not have had time to make enough antibodies and there are unfortunately a lot of unvaccinated dogs around. Many owners either do not bother "everyone elses dog is vaccinated so mine will be alright" or they do not realise that boosters have to be given regularly after the first set of jabs.

Bronte had 2nd jab at 10.5 weeks and first outside walk at 12 weeks. This was based on the vets recommendation.

We had our puppy vaccinated at 9 weeks and then 11 weeks and she then went out 10 days later

Alfie was done at 7 weeks when we got him, then a second jab 2 weeks later.  Although the vet advises to wait we take our dogs out once they have their 2nd jab because we have 4 others who are bringing germs home daily - so he has been going out all this week.  Maybe different vets are different in different areas?  Alfie was definitely ready to go out and I am delighted he can finally get down on the floor as he was getting very wriggly to carry on our daily escapades!!
Hope your pup enjoys his walks as much as Alfie does when he can go out.

Harry had his first injection before we even got him home (8 weeks) then another 2 weeks for the second, then he went straight out.

But yes it's very confusing, I keep saying it, but use common sense

But what is common sense in this case??

Our breeder actually said that other dogs in the house shouldn't be taken out until the puppy had completed the vaccs course. She also said that the puppy shouldn't be touched by anyone other than staff when taken to the vet for jabs.

I'm not sure anyone can unexpected to have inate common sense on this - I for one have no idea how common these illnesses are.

Riley had his first injection at 9 weeks and 4 days and his second one at 11 weeks and 5 days. Purely as the day before was a bank holiday.
The vet advised us to wait two weeks after the second one before taking him out. We took him out on day 13.

Common Sense

Noun

Sound practical judgment that is independent of specialized knowledge, training, or the like; normal native intelligence.

I am well aware of what common sense is, thank you!  >:D

However, I don't think it applies in this case - you NEED some specialist knowledge to decide what the risks are when considering when to take you newly-vaccinated puppy out.
Common sense tells me my dog needs vaccinating - it does NOT tell me how soon  those vaccines work or the risks involved in the interim...hence the variety of replies to the original question.

Well why ask for opinion, when you've just stated you "NEED specialist knowledge"

To my knowledge I've never known any vets to trend these boards.

They shouldn't though, as all vaccines are the same just with different company labels on, recently had this argument over Bumbles second injection, all local vets wanted to do the full course again as the breeder did the first.  Had it in writing from Nobivac, Vanguard and Virbac. Vets phoned the companies and were told the same, so they did it without questioning.

I had this reply from Virbac

Hi Sharon

I can hereby guarantee absolutely that Canigen dog vaccine is exactly the same as Nobivac - just a different label. If you have any trouble in this regard please ask your consulting vet to contact us at 01359 243243.

Why post any questions on here at all, if common sense is all you need??

The answer regarding antibodies was specialist knowledge - it actually tells me how and why vaccines work.
Of course I'll take the advice of my vet ultimately, since he's the person giving the vaccs - but there are plenty of breeders on here with specialist knowledge and also plenty of people with first- hand experience and anecdotal evidence.

We got Bella at 8weeks she was our first puppy so did everything by the book, 1st jab first vet visit, 2nd jab 2 weeks later then walkers I think 2 weeks after that.

Got Molly at 11ish weeks, same with the jabs, difference being she came everywhere with us met and greeted everyone, we had bellas doggie friends come to our house etc.
We even took Molly on the beach as it was tidal for little walks

I'm not saying this was the right thing to do but I feel Molly is a better dog for the better socialisation I did.

I took Molly to the vets for her 2nd jab on Friday when she was just 10 weeks old.  The breeder had said we could take her out about 5 days after second injection but when I asked the vet for her opinion, she said that was too soon and to wait 2 weeks and to take her out to places where there were few dogs for her first few outings.  And this is what I am going to do - I'd rather be safe than sorry even though it's frustrating, although I may end up taking her out at 13 days!  I do agree with the others, the guidelines you get can be very confusing!

Our vet said 14 days after second jab officially, but if we wanted to take them out before if we took them to remote places away from heavy dog-walking areas (canals, parks) we should be fine.  We took both dogs up onto the moors, off the beaten track a couple of days after their second injections.  I must stress that these were not popular walks as some hill walks can be, ie not the Pennine Way etc.  We saw no other dogs.  We did also take them out in our arms into town for socialisation, getting used to other people and traffic noise etc.  With Barney it was literally in our arms.  For Pippa we got a puppy sling so she could accompany us when we took Barney out.

A puppy sling sounds good!  I haven't taken Molly into town yet but she has been in the car several times in a travelling crate which she seems quite happy with and she has met a few people while being carried.  I do think you have to be careful as lots of dogs aren't vaccinated or don't have their vaccines topped up correctly (advice from our new vet) and to initially take them out to places that aren't heavily dog walked seems very sound advice.

Ozzy came to us at 11 weeks, unvaccinated (the breeder said that it wasn't necessary before 15 weeks because he still had his Mum's immunity)  Needless to say we had his jabs started a week after we brought him home (on the advice of the vet who said it was always better to wait a week after getting them home, as if they developed an illness it was difficult to know whether they had brought it with them from the breeder, or if it was something to do with the jab).  His second jab was 3 weeks later, at 15 weeks, on a Monday, and the vet said we could take him out 'at the end of the week'.  We took him for his first walk on the Friday.  On the Sunday he developed colitis and we took him to our vets practice who are open 7 days a week, and saw a different vet.  He said that as he'd only had his jab a week ago we should still have been carrying him and not let him walk!  So, it just goes to show that even vets in the same practice have different views on how long after the second jab they should be allowed out. However, we did wonder if the colitis was caused by him being allowed out too soon, but we'll never know!!

I think the problem is that if they have had their first jab when you get them, the breeder will give the advice given by their vet. This may not necessarily be the same as the advice of your own vet, as we can see they vary! I think that it is ultimately your own vet who will look after your pup, so best go with their advice! That said, I do agree with carrying them to get them out and about and used to traffic noises etc
