Title: Unbalanced cocker
Post by: Izzyburgin on November 12, 2012, 08:51:07 PM
Today I was walking my bitch (izzy). We were out for 5 minutes and she seems completely normal. She went in a bush where i could see and when whistled back she seemed unsteady.
When she got to me she kept falling over to one side and seemed frightened, I ran home with her in
My arms and she seemed sleep and drowsy. I took her straight to the vets and she perked up!
The vet couldn't find anything wrong.
I asle her to check her blood sugar, heart and lungs etc! She also checked her ears and temperature!
Everything seemed okay! She gave her an antiinflammetry and told us to observe for 24 hours!
Since the vets she has been fine eating and drinking and playing?

Any ideas what this could be? Xxx

Could she have been stung by something? A bit late in the year, but maybe a drowsy wasp?

I think, given that your vet has checked her over, all you can do is keep an eye on her and watch her carefully when she's out on her walks.

Hope that it was just a 'one off' and that she stays well :bigarmhug:

Thankyou for replying, that's what I thought after as she was stung as a puppy and went all sleep and drowsy! It's the balance thing as well she couldn't even sit up she just kept falling to one side!
I'm going to keep a very close eye on her and keep my fingers crossed it was a sting!

I was in floods of tears! X

What an awful worry for you, and especially as you have had no real explanation.

Sounds to me like some kind of bite or sting though, as you have had an adverse reaction with her in the past.

Sending  :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:  for you both. X

I don't wish to alarm, but could it have been a kind of petit mal (fit)?

Our lab had a few epilepsy-type fits some years ago - usually after she'd got hyped up.
She'd start to stagger around like she was drunk, before semi-collapsing and sleeping it off. Afterwards, she'd be perfectly normal again.

It must have been very frightening!  If it was a petit mal type of fit, then it will probably happen again at some point, whether you walk her or not.  Perhaps just give her lead walks for a few days and steer clear of the area where it happened, just in case she disturbed a wasps nest or something.  If that's what she did then she knows it's there and might decide to investigate again!  I hope you don't have any further incidents.

Just a thought, if you have a phone that you can record video on, if it does happen again, try to record some of it so that you have something to show the vet.... it may help with a diagnosis, especially if it is some form of seizure activity.

Hoping though that it was a one off and that Izzy is back to her normal self today :)

Thankyou for replying! Did your lab stop them or has this continued? Did she ever have treatment or a diagnosis? X

Thankyou, she seems fine today back to normal very strange as yesterday I thought she wouldn't make it to the vets!  I didn't have my phone on me yesterday but will always take it from now on!

Thankyou, we thought that too but when we took her back for a check up at the vets today she thought not! I'm gona go have a look at the place where it happened!
The vet didn't do a great deal to be honest' I had to suggest that she might want to take her temperature!  >:(

It's so frustrating when you don't get any answers to what the cause was.

Everything crossed for you, that you get things sorted soon.

What a worry for you but in the vets defense you did say she perked up by then and the vet had little or nothing to go on, there is every likelihood that this was a one off and had the vet been too 'over keen' you could have ended up (in your fearful state) being talked into all sorts of horrible, invasive and expensive tests.  These doglets sure know how to worry us, I swear I have more grey hairs cause of the dogs than anything else in my life...  Big hugs and try and continue to enjoy your walks as if you are anything like me the next couple are going to be fraught with worry leaving you and Izzy both tired and stressed.

We never had an official diagnosis - epilepsy was suggested, and we were given diazepam to give her when they happened. She probably had no more than 4 or 5 over the space of about 2 years, and nothing now for about 5 years (she's nearly 12).
It was mentioned that rawhide could be a contributing factor, so we stopped giving her anything containing it.

Very scary when it was happening, especially as we had a Springer at the time too - and she would get frightened and try to attack Bea mid-seizure.

Not quite the same but Harvey has ' fainted ' on me twice while I have been out walking him. Both times I was stood chatting to another dog owner when Harvey just collapsed, no warning at all just completely out of it although no fitting or foaming. Both times after a couple of mins he'd come round with his tail between his legs, then another minute back to normal as though nothing had happened. The vets did an ECG and bloods both normal - the last time was in March this year . I know how you feel to start with you are so worried it will happen again but to be honest I do forget about it. Hope she is okay.

How strange!  I had no idea that dogs could faint!
