Title: Confused by KC registration re: health tests
Post by: Honormum on November 16, 2012, 10:33:10 PM
I was filling in the KC registration change of ownership form earlier, and noticed that Teddy's mum doesn't have a health test date next to her name, but his dad does.

We were told that both parents were DNA health tested, yet it says hereditary clear - does that make any difference,or does it amount to the same thing?

I think that if both the dam's parents were clear for those hereditary conditions then the dam is automatically deemed hereditary clear. My pup is shown as hereditary clear on the KC, although he's never been tested, because his parents both are clear. Not sure whether if you're breeding the dam is supposed to be tested if she's hereditary clear, but it sounds as the dam is okay. I do know that my breeder had to get the mum eye-tested, but she's on the assured breeder scheme, where I think they have to have regular eye tests.

Thanks Sophie.

I'm probably just being a bit neurotic, but it seems odd to claim a dog has been health tested (suggesting they have actually paid for testing), when what they actually mean is that they are hereditary clear.

I went to a lot of trouble to try to find a breeder who health tested both parents (not just grandparents).

Maybe Dad has been tested clear, whereas mum is hereditary clear, which still means your dog is hereditary clear.  If you plan to breed they do recommend testing  if it's a 2nd or 3rd generation of hereditary rather than tested.

It might be worth dropping the breeder a quick call just asking him/her to clarify the situation, for peace of mind - just act all ignorant and confused.
