Title: Lip Fold Operation
Post by: Jeanette on December 01, 2012, 06:48:12 PM
Hi

Has anyone had this operation on their cocker and if so could you please let me know your experiences i.e. was it a quick recovery, did it stop the infections, how long it took to heal etc.

Thanks in advance  :003:

My first Cocker had a little nip and tuck on one side after recurring infections. It was about 24 years ago, so I don't remember everything about it but I remember that it healed up quickly and he didn't have any further problems.

Coco had the op earlier this year after months of persistent infections and a very stinky mouth. :020:

They used dissolving stitches and it healed up really well and pretty quickly.  It never stopped her eating  :005:  After a few months she was free of infection, it was all healed up and she was pong free - So, for us, it was a success as there has been no recurrence of lip fold infections so far.  :D

Just had an email from the vets to say the swab has come back as psuedomonas, not sure whether that means he will operate or not  :-\

They may still operate as those blurry things can be very resistant to anti-biotics  ;)

I know, Indie had it in her ear in August.   She had to have an ear flush and then drops twice a day, it took ages to go.     I hope they go ahead and do something, his skin is being destroyed and the folds getting deeper and deeper.

Sorry to hear it's pseudomonas :-\. Horrible stuff. Poor boy, fingers crossed the vet decides to go ahead, or at the very least it's not a resistant strain he has :luv:

They're just waking him up now and picking him up at 6.30PM.   The message from the vet was that the lip folds were really bad and he's hoping more surgery won't be required.    Not sure what to make of that.   My poor boy  :luv:

Hope he recovers quickly, Jeanette :luv: and no more surgery is required :bigarmhug:.

I was wondering, is Quinn seeing a specialist? It was the only thing that got Brodie's ears finally under control. His opinion was that pseudomonas does not attack a healthy system; with Brodie it may be underlying allergies (although I wonder if the pancreatitis could have anything to do with it), I will find out if he is going to do tests when we go back at the start of January.

Hopefully this op will have sorted things out, but if not then it is something to think about :bigarmhug:

I've heard that it attacks dogs with a weak immune system too.    It was Indie who had them in her ears at the same time as Brodie.    Quinn has had skin infections since a puppy, he has had horrible lip folds for a long while however they went really bad in the last couple of months (just after his vaccinations coincidentally)

Thank you for all wishes.   His folds were very bad and he has had lots of skin removed, the worst case my vet has seen so hoping he feels slightly better tomorrow than he did tonight.    :luv:

I think he is a bit better than yesterday, not doing much except for going for a wee and having his tea.    He did yawn earlier and to be honest that was a shock seeing his mouth and the stitches  :o  and he's got his bark back so no trouble opening his mouth whereas last night he wouldn't.    We had one peaceful day  :shades:

I've just giving him some metacam so hope that kicks in quickly as he was whining earlier so assuming that's because he is feeling the pain.

He seems a lot better in himself today, off to the vets tomorrow for his check up so will know more on how the wounds are doing.    I'm not really sure what to expect, his ears are a soppy mucky mess as he is constant drool/crappy stuff coming out and with wearing the cone his ears aren't drying out.

I just hope he lets me sleep tonight.     The downside of small crates is he can't fit in it with the cone so he's a bit out of sorts not having his safety area.

I know this was several months ago but didn't want to post too soon incase I tempted fate however Quinn's lipfold operation has been a success.   He had absolutely loads of his lip folds cut away due to the amount of infection/sores and touch wood his mouth is now fine.    :luv:

Here's his mouth two weeks after the operation minus all the hangy bottom folds

I am so pleased to read this, Jeanette :D. You must be very relieved that it's finally under control. He is looking great too - I'd never know he'd had anything done if I didn't know :luv:.

Quinn looks in good shape. Glad it all went well and he's completey over it.
How long did he have his lampshade on if you don't mind me asking? Ozzie is going in for her lipfold op on Tuesday so it was lovely to see a photo of Quinn.  :D

Unfortunately he had to have the cone on until his stitches were removed as he was trying to paw his mouth all the time and would have ripped the stitches.     Operation was on the 20th December and stitches out on the 3rd January, in hindsight I should have cut the length off his ears as there was quite a lot of leakage coming from his wounds so he ended up in a bit of a mess with the cone i.e. his ears.     I had to cut the length off once the cone was off completely.

He had a blip during the recovery time when he was put on a different set of antibiotics along with his original course, these made him very poorly and he had to stay at the vets - once they put him on fluids and took him off the other set of tabs he was fine again.   This wasn't anything to do with the op - just a bad reaction to the tabs.

Seeing as he's never had anything like  this done to him before, he was very very brave - he doesn't like being handled by strangers too much so it all went better than I thought.  :D

Hope Ozzie's operation goes well - it's such a relief once the infection/ulcers/gaggy smell has gone  :luv: :luv:

ETA - Not sure if Ozzie sleeps in a crate but the only problems I had was the lack of sleep, Quinn is crated normally at night but he couldn't fit in his crate with the extra large cone he had to wear - I would have bought a bigger crate in advance if I'd thought about it.

Thanks Jeanette that's really helpful information. I will give her ears a trim tonight. No she doesn't sleep in a crate she sleeps on our bed so that might be a problem as I should imagine its a bit difficult to jump up with a cone on. I will move her day bed upstairs at night so she can be comfy in that.
We just hope baby brother George doesn't  aggravate her to much as he is bouncy so and so.  :D

The cone tends to keep them away, Indie ran round in circles trying to avoid getting whacked by it.    :005:

Looking at his lovely neat chops has made me realize just how baggy Rubys' folds are  :-\ touch wood we have had only one pongy incident that seemed to respond to hibi scrub.
