Think little Daisy has Kennel Cough
« on: August 18, 2017, 09:38:29 PM »
Poor little Daisy came home with us last Saturday at 9 weeks old from the rescue. She started having a little cough on Monday/Tuesday and it is getting a bit worse today.

Have had a look on you tube and she is coughing exactly the same as the Video's so I'm pretty sure she has it.  She isn't too bad with it at the moment but has gone from coughing two or three times a day to maybe a dozen or so times today. She isn't coughing any fluid up and is still loving her food and very playful and alert. I've read previous posts etc and can see this is virs that can sometimes get progressively worse. At what stage should she be going to the vets as she is such a young little pup :(

If you think she has kennel cough I wouldn't hang around, phone your vet. It is very contagious, and in such a young pup best to nip it in the bud. Don't want complications. One of my little pups had it once, and was quite poorly, and there were repercussions. Better to be safe, set your mind at rest, hope your wee Daisy is OK  :bigarmhug:

Poor little Daisy! i
Don't have any actual  first hand experience with kennel cough but with a pup that young, I wouldn't leave anyrhing to chance and would definately see a vet.
Hope she's feeling better soon!  :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug:

My rescue had it, and as he also had stinking breath and rotten teeth ,  the kennel cough went to his chest and he started coughing up froth all the tie. He needed lots of antibiotics, and didn't socialise with any dog except my other one, for six weeks (she didn't catch it).    This  was a real shame because he became agitated with other dogs , and still is.

Definitely speak to the vets, as it's very contagious they may not want you to take Daisy in. But they will be able to advise you what to do. I gave mine manuka honey to help soothe the throat. Hope little one gets better soon x

Anitbiotics are usually no good for kennel cough as it is a virus! Keep her away from other dogs as it is very contagious hope she gets well real soon x x x

Thank you all so much for your help!

I rang the vet last night and she suggested I take Daisy in today. I will pick up some of the honey and cough mixture on the way and hopefully they will help.

You are right Phoenix, it is really going to interfere with her socialisation which is such a shame!

I wouldn't worry TOO much about the socialization at this point. When I picked up Humphrey, I was  advised by a gun dog trainer to actually not let him have any contact with dogs at all for a few weeks and use the time to let him bind with me and make myself the most important person in his life.
Possibly not everyone would agree but certainly in our case, it turned out to be good advice, - Humphrey loves to play with other dogs and is very socialable but I've not really had any problems calling him away, he's still very much focussed on me. You'll have chance to let her mix when she's over the cough, she's still young enough...
Best of luck and all the best for little Daisy!  :luv:

Thank you Theo961

bizzylizzy that has made me feel a lot better about socialisation!

Went to vet's yesterday. They have given us a probiotic and natural diet food trays as she has also had an upset tummy the last few days. Got to keep an eye on her and if she worsens or her cough becomes productive I'm to take her straight back. She is no worse today just the same as past few days so fingers crossed!

Glad you got it checked out and now you know what to watch for, and the vet is aware.  Lot has happened for baby Daisy in the last few weeks, will take her a little time to settles.  Sending her a cuddle.  :luv:
