Puppy coat
« on: March 06, 2013, 07:02:22 AM »
Hi All...looking for a bit of advice. Oscar is 15 weeks old now, and seems to be shedding a fair bit of fur. I was wondering what's best to groom him, we have a brush for him at the minute...which if he gets half a chance doubles as a chew toy, but that's another story. Would it be worth us investing in a coat king, if so which should we go for.
Many thanks
Baz and Deb

I would use a normal metal comb with an elastic band threaded through it.  I used this on ours when they were pups and it gets keeps the puppy fluff under control, you'll find quite a bit comes out.  Just hold the skin where you are combing so it doesn't tug/cause discomfort to him.

I personally wouldn't use a coat king until your pup is around a year old and his coat fully matured.

Many thanks for this, this our first dog and we're learning every day. Do we just leave a few mm's of the combs teeth exposed ?

I didn't find that the comb/rubber combo waited. I waited until my dog was 7 months and took him to a groomer (I did pull out a bit of fluff by hand - not easy!). The groomer used a coat king, and I've been using my own for the last couple of months ago - it's got out so much of his puppy fluff. My breeder who's also a breeder said wait until they're about 7 months before stripping.
I find the coat king really good for things like thinning the hair at the back of head and ears. I have a 26-blade one, which everyone on here recommended.

I never thought riley would ever loose his puppy coat,  he was so fluffy. Its only now aged.12 montjs its almost all been replaced with a finer straighter coat, I can now see his shape  and so much easier to groom.
I used the coat king once every few weeks from about 6 months .

Many thanks for all this info, I think I'll just continue to brush him to remove any clarts he accumulates until I bath him. As for the hairs around the house, the Dyson will take care of them on a daily basis, Oscar loves chasing the Dyson... :lol2:

I used the comb/elastic method on Mollie each day.  You'll be amazed what you get out and all you are doing is combing them!  I didn't spend ages just a little each day.  She has a lovely sleek coat now.  :D
