How old?
« on: January 13, 2014, 02:09:54 PM »
We have got a new girl coming to live with us in three weeks time but it was a very difficult decision after losing our Millie such a short time ago.
The breeder we are getting her from says she normally lets her pups leave home at just seven weeks, can this be right? Also they leave without their vaccinations. I guess at seven weeks it would too soon anyway?
We have seen her with her mother and siblings in her home environment and have no doubts about the breeder in any other respect.

My dogs have always had their first vaccinations when they have come to me. I think about 7 - 8 weeks is about the average time to take them.

I got Archie at 8 weeks old and both sets of vacs were done after I brought him home.
Both taken away from us far too soon. x  RIP Angels Odie & Archie, causing mayhem at the Rainbow, no doubt!

Reggie was 8 weeks and we had his vaccinations done ourselves.

Quite a lot of breeders don't vaccinate puppies prior to them eaving for their new homes.  My vet ecommends first vac at 8 weeks (so, yes 7 weeks may be a bit young).  But also, some vets will suggest starting the whole course all over again if they use a different brand of vaccine.  So it makes sense that puppies are vaccinated from the beginning in their new homes by their own vet.  As for puppies being homed at 7 weeks - I don't personally believe it's a disaster.  They are weaned by then, and while an extra week with siblings and mum is advantageous in terms of their mental/ social development (and is a requirement I think for assured breeders), my latest puppy came to me at just over 7 weeks and has been totally fine.  I don't believe his development has been compromised in any way as a result of coming to me at 7 weeks - he is well adjusted and confident around people and dogs.  Although my other two dogs have definitely helped with teaching him about manners and how to behave around adult dogs.

I have had Jamie for a few days over three weeks.  He was just eight weeks old when I got him and he had not been vaccinated, although he was microchipped. It is felt that pups shouldn't be vaccinated until they are at least eight weeks old.  Jamie has now had both of his vaccinations.  I do think that seven weeks is a tad too young to leave their mother and siblings.

I think it is better to have the vacs done by your own vet.

Our vets vaccinations didn't match the ones given by the breeder so we had to start again. And I had a hyper 3 month old puppy, desperate for some exercise, stuck in the house for an extra 2 weeks.

Our breeder recommended that we should do all vaccinations in case they didn't match what her vet may have given. Our two came to us at 8 weeks. ;)

I am no longer worried now. It does make sense waiting for all the vaccinations to be done by our own vet as I wouldn't want to take a chance on having them done twice.
Seven weeks seems a bit early but the breeder did say we could wait another week if we really want to. She would come to us on my birthday then. What a present that would make!
Thanks for the replies.
