When to first trim India?
« on: April 02, 2014, 10:39:10 AM »
Hi all.
Myself and my partner are the proud owners of a 16 week old puppy called India. We've been having a little brush most days but her feet and legs are getting very hairy. I'm planning to trim myself but as a beginner I'm not sure when the right time to start? Any help/comments would be greatly appreciated!

Hi and welcome to COL :D

At 16 weeks India is ready for a bit of a tidy up if her legs and feet are getting hairy. Many people start by taking their puppy to a groomer at about that age for a bath and to have feet trimmed, even if they intend to do most of the trimming themselves in the future.

If you decide to go to a groomer try to find one who doesn't just assume that all Cockers should be completely shaved. Sadly, that seems to be the norm for lots of groomers, perhaps because many Cocker owners decided to go down that route ultimately. If you find a good groomer he or she should be willing to give you a few pointers about how to groom and trim. It can be quite challenging learning from scratch (well it was for me :005:) but it's rewarding and a lot cheaper if you do most or all of the grooming yourself.

Is India a show type Cocker or worker, and what colour is she? Show types usually have more coat than workers and black hair is often the most profuse.

Thank you so much for the reply. She's a blue roan show cocker. She's definitely starting to get hairy. I'll start researching groomers near me, which is somerset near to Taunton. Xx
