Riley was attacked by another dog
« on: May 15, 2016, 07:30:14 PM »
We were out on a walk last week and met a jogger who had a very large dalmation running in front of him.  Both were off lead, and I called Riley back which he did but this dog was like a bat out of hell and launched onto Riley, pinning him to the ground and biting chunks out of his back and making his mouth bleed.  Riley was very submissive and just took it, the man ran and grabbed his dog off and was very concerned and apologetic, and waited until Riley's mouth had stopped bleeding.  I asked him to take his dog away as it was unsettling Riley more by being there, and I stupidly didn't get the mans details as I would have reported it - a nasty aggressive dog like that should be muzzled or on a strong lead!!  >:D  Anyway Riley didn't seem too bothered although a little quiet that day, but yesterday we were out and the same happened again when another male springer just pounced as it too was off lead and although initially friendly, when I called Riley and he followed me, this dog gave chase and attacked.  This time, Riley fought back and it seemed to take forever to separate them (not helped as the springers owner was walking home from the local pub??!?!?!).  I am so worried now to walk anywhere, Riley isn't neutered at 3 but is a very gentle loving dog that's never ever shown aggression in any way shape or form.  I just don't know what to do next to be honest...........

Poor you and poor Riley. What a horrible thing to happen twice in such a short space of time :( sadly you get owners that seem completely unconcerned by their dogs actions and seem to think it's totally fine.
Hope Riley isn't too upset by what happens, thinking of you both X

So very sorry to hear this - what bad luck to have two attacks so close together. One of the reasons we decided to have Henry neutered is because we meet so many off-lead dogs, not all of them under their owners control at all. Henry is such a friendly little soul, he managed to get himself bitten when he was quite little but very luckily didn't let it affect him. He was set upon by a dalmatian just the other week. Because I was training him on the long line at the time, I stepped between them to get the line pulled in so neither got tangled and ended up with some nasty bruises on my leg from where the dalmatian's nails dug into me as he jumped up at me. The dalmatian's owner just watch me struggle with a puppy trying to submit, a dalmatian rearing up over him and both getting tangled in the line.

Hopefully your two incidents were just terribly unlucky coincidences and you and Riley can start to enjoy your walks again. Thinking of you both.

Poor Riley! , - poor you! Do hope this experience doesn't  have any lasting effects, if only people realized the damage they inflict by not keeping their dogs under control!  >:D

I'm almost cross with myself that i've been considering neutering him because of this - I've not had him done purely because I have a terrible fear of general anaethesia and for me, it would only be an option in a life or death situation.  We've been going in the car really early and walking at a local deer park for the last few days where I know we won't meet other dogs and not walked locally.    :'(

I would suggest seeking some help from a behaviourist - it doesn't excuse the poor behaviour from both owners but for Riley to be attacked twice with little time between them it may be due to him giving off signals to the other dogs you are not aware of......

Hope Riley is OK after the attacks and I also hope the other owners have learned a lesson from the experience (sadly, I suspect they won't have....)

Horrible luck! But don't despair. Dogs can recover with help. You can ask advice from a behaviourist...I think it will be a question of gradually de-sensitises him till he gets over it...take him out and let him meet nice dogs again. Do you have people with well behaved dogs you can walk with?
My rescue corgi x was attacked by a passing lurcher while he was hooked on the fence and I was feeding the Shetland. (He's neutered by the way so don't think it's a big issue). He was shaken for a day or two but we tried to stay confident and let him get a grip on his nerves. He is OK now it seems. Though have to say not being the brightest bulb on the chandelier probably helps him!  ;) Good luck.
