Suddenly growling and barking at the cat
« on: June 25, 2016, 09:51:31 PM »
The day we brought Henry home our very quiet cat basically moved upstairs, coming down only when Henry is in his crate. We did our best to introduce them properly, but she's a very gentle and shy cat and he was... Well, a cocker puppy! They've eyed each up from a distance plenty of times and actually crossed paths a few times, and Henry has just made friendly overtures as he would to another dog, although she immediately runs off.

The other day, the cat was sitting at the top of the stairs (behind the safety gate) and Henry was sitting st the bottom when he started growling and then barking. This evening he was in his crate and woke up when the cat walked into the kitchen and again started growling.

Is this change in behaviour because he's getting older and more territorial? Should I be worried?

We have a 7(ish) yr old Tom cat who came to us as a stray, which is why we can only estimate his age.  He's always been quite nervy, strongly territorial and semi feral.
We brought Blue home two weeks ago, and the introduction has not gone brilliantly.  The cat is afraid of Blue and avoids him wherever possible.   Blue is curious about the cat and would love to get near enough for a sniff and potentially a nip.  There's fat chance of that happening, as he has barked at the cat whenever he had an opportunity.  The cat is occasionally deliberately provocative, and if it came to a scrap, my money would be on the cat, but so far we are just accepting that they'll not become friends anytime soon and the cat has safe spaces within the house which Blue can't access.  I'm using both Adaptil and Feliway diffusers, and Blue gets a reward if he sits near the cat without barking or attempting to pounce.  It's not ideal, but better than the expected outcome, which was that the cat would just walk out and never be seen again.

It can happen, dogs and cats be best mates. my staffy Theakston and my 3 cats (plus 4 kittens) all lived happily. iI think they all thought of themselves as the same  breed . Saying that Theakston was a " other" cat hater and would not tolerate any intruders . He out lived all the cats except one and I do believe old Musky cat lost the will to live after Theakston died :'(

It used to make us laugh, they would sit lined up on the pavement watching OH wash the car
