Evening, nights and mornings. Any advice?!
« on: August 09, 2016, 08:13:35 AM »
Hi to you all. 11 week old Cooper been with us for a few days doing nicely but could do with some help re routine. Not sure how much he should be awake to sleeping ratio during the day but in the evenings he's been basically asleep from 9pm. Took him out for wee at 11 and then he was up at 2.30 and again 5.30   The latter he only wanted to play!! After trying to snuggle with him on the sofa (well there's Gotta be some pluses😜) and him chewing my hair, dressing gown and then  nose!! I put him back in his pen and he settled again til my husband came down at 7 and another wee...  I'd really like to know what to do with these evening nighttime early morning routines. He has pads in his pen but I was hoping to toilet train outside.  Don't mind waking up for weds but not play. Also would say he's not really a scaredy cat dog. Quite confident and my old dog who has ignored him totally is with him in the kitchen. When to leave? When to respond? Any help? Huge thanks

Good morning!
That actually seems like a very good routine to me... I did something similar to that with Charlie, out at 11 for a last wee before bed- then up middle of the night for another then up again early. It worked very well for us and like you we wanted to toilet train with no pads. As for sleeping during the day- at that age he will need plenty of sleep so wouldn't worry if he is sleeping lots. If your happy to get up then just let him out to toilet with no real interaction and he will get the idea. As for the interaction with your older dog- I have no experience with this so wouldn't like to give any advice but I'm sure someone will come along soon and answer that. Sounds like your doing a really good job.

Ditto! That routine sounds exactly the same as ours was - at this time of year, a cuppa, still in your dressing gown while experiencing the dawn chorus is a good relaxing way to start a cocker filled day!!!!!!

Thanks to you! I was thinking that twice a night (2 and 5am) was quite a lot. He is also doing wees on the puppy pad within the pen but he's used to that from the breeder.   I don't mind getting up for the weeping but playing at 5.30 I can't say I'm really up for that!  First night he came into my arms and we rested together but maybe because it's light at that time he didn't do that today. He just seemed to be wide awake at 5.30!!! I didn't have the nerve to put him back in the pen and let him whimper but maybe I should... Ideally I'd like to get to 6.30 am!

Thanks for the words of encouragement though

If you want to get away from the pads the night time pit stop and early one will be needed because his bladder will be very small at the moment. I remember the 5am get up where all I wanted to do was go back to sleep but this soon starts to get later and later- nowadays (7.5 months) Charlie won't make a peep and just waits for me to get up (this morning around 7:30). Do what you feel and just make it a permanent routine and he will soon get used to it. Just remember that once he's up and about he's likely going to need wees more frequently.

Sounds perfectly ok to me.  Blue is 18 weeks now, and still goes out for the toilet at 11/12 ish (before my DH goes to bed), then I get up at 5.30 and 7.  By the time it's daylight - around 5 - 5.30 at present here, he's wide awake and full of the joys, wanting to play, so getting him to stay quietly in his pen is not easy for that last couple of hours, but he does settle down if I close the door and say 'see you soon!'.  (He does usually do both wee and poop at 5.30though, so I'm reluctant to cancel that visit yet.  My intention being to extend it by 5 minutes each day until I am just getting up at 7ish).
To me, it's a small price to pay for what was a very quick process of toilet training him.

Hi, this sounds very normal to me.  Their bladders are only very small but you do need to make sure they don't eat and drink too late.  Thistle's last meal is at around 5pm, bed is at 10.  They'll be a little water for her to drink over night (she rarely finishes it).  I'll let her out at just before and make sure she goes (sometimes takes a while if she wants to play..... lol).  I must admit that I only got up with her in the night for the first couple of weeks as we have a large utility room with a tiled floor......  Anyway, as of last week when I get up with her at 6:30.... no wee!!! yeh!!!   ..... I bet now I've said that tomorrow there'll be wee.... :lol2:
