Early mornings!!
« on: August 20, 2016, 08:34:00 PM »
We've had our little cooper for 2 weeks now (he's 13 weeks old) and he's doing amazingly. Seemingly confident yet not dominating. He's loved his first few walks this week. Met some nice doggies who've mostly ignored him. Is it only humans that love puppies?!  Eating well sleeping more or less one hour full on then one hour sleep.  Training well too although I do notice the slightly more "independent" nature of the cocker compared to my extremely biddable Labrador when she was a puppy. Still working on recall which is at about 70%!   I cannot fault him and totally smitten.   What I'd really love your advice on is the early mornings. He seems to go from 11 to 5am which is brilliant I know BUT I wonder how long this phase lasts and how I could eek  that out?  His last food is around 6.00pm and he rarely drinks a few sips beyond 8 ish. He's also pretty much out of it asleep by 9... But he does wake up 5 ish and then is UP kind of up!!!😱
Any wise words how long it'll be before we can get to 6.30 say. I'm a struggling with exhaustion! Although  very Happy  Big thanks

difficult to say really as some pups vary and just when you think you've cracked it they decide they want to get up early again. Problem is dogs can be early risers - not all but some do. For ages mine (and am talking adult dogs here) kept getting me up at 5am and only recently now get up whenever

I think you are already doing well for pup to sleep that long without you getting up.
does little Cooper sleep in a crate or "loose", in your room or on his own.

I'm sure everyone will have different solutions to this problem. We established a ritual when Penny was tiny that when she was on the verge of dropping asleep at night, I would carry her downstairs to her bed in the laundry and shut the door. I would let her out of the laundry when we woke up the next morning.
I still do this - Penny is now almost four! And it still works beautifully. She doesn't make a sound till we get up. It doesn't help on holidays. If she comes with us in the caravan she is always awake and ready to play at about 5.30 am. But at least we have never had any trouble with early waking at home.

It will take as long as it takes, unfortunately.
I also have a strict 'routine' with Blue, I put him in his crate around 8.30 - 9pm, with his bedtime biscuit.  My husband will take him out to toilet at 11 - midnight,  before he comes to bed.  Blue's crate is completely covered, but he will still wake around first light and will shout to be let out.  I take him out to toilet any time between 5.30 - 6am, and put him back in his crate for another hour, but the noise can sometimes be unbearable and I end up getting up anyway!
Blue is 20 weeks old tomorrow.  Believe it or not, things have improved enormously - for a long time I was getting up several times a night with him.

For what you have achieved at only 13 weeks I think you should be very proud, just be prepared for a relapse as things change. Most of my dogs have always been early up in the morning and our cocker is no different. We now have a group of walkers who all meet in the morning at 6.45 so all the dogs can run around and get ready for the day.

The way the weather has been recently it is the best time of the day to be honest and a joy to be out in the morning air.

Regarding other dogs ignoring your puppy, this is quite common.  Ollie started showing very little patience for puppies a couple of months ago (now 13 months) and we now try to avoid them as he will snap at exuberant puppies and we don't want them to have a bad experience meeting other dogs. So don't be offended if you see other people with dogs trying to avoid you or walking their dogs quickly past you, they probably know their dogs are not very tolerant and don't want your pup to be snapped at!

Thank you all so much!  I do think he's been pretty amazing and I will try to manage any expectations of a 6.30+start!
He sleeps in an open crate within a pen area which has a pad down in it as this is what the breeder had (bed within a pen). It's worked really well but I hope at some point in time to loose the pen. When he can be trusted!!
I'll stick with what's working after your advice.
