Pancreatitis/irritable bowel feeding
« on: February 20, 2025, 09:18:42 AM »
Tango, my nearly 12 y/o show cocker, has a history of tummy problems which have been called IBS or pancreatitis by various vets.

He's been on a variety of the low fat foods for years but invariably gets bored with one so we switch to another brand. I've tried feeding wet, dry and a mixture of both. Over the last few months though his diarrhoea flare ups were getting more frequent so the vet did blood and stool tests, both of which came back all clear. I have never seen any blood in the stools or when he has a flare up and he doesn't vomit. She suggested trying hypoallergenic instead of gastrointestinal food, which I did, and at this moment tango currently has a mixture of the EN and HA kibble which has reduced the amount of stools each day but also generally made them firmer, which is good, and I've only had one flare up (completely out of the blue) in the last two and a half weeks. I have temporarily stopped the wet food as he really didn't take to it and, as I said, his stools seem firmer since I cut it out. He's not overly fond of the 'kibble only' diet either though if I'm honest so at the moment I do put a very small amount of tuna on it to make it more flavoursome. I'm worried though that he isn't eating enough as his weight was down when I went to the vet earlier this week. He's fine when we have our walk and I realise that, as in human years we're about the same age😂, he's allowed to be quite slow around the house!

The vet has basically said that as the various tests showed nothing untoward this might just be how he is now with his stomach but I just wondered if anyone else has any similar experience or has any suggestions as to how I can make the bland kibble only diet more attractive. I'm tempted to put a bit of chappie with it but am worried it might upset his system again! She did suggest a scan but I'm holding off on that for now as I'm not convinced.

Thanks for any thoughts.
Kevin

Hi Kevin

When I had Ollie who defied all odds and I passed at 15 plus I soon realised kibble bored him and I added a little extra on top. Usually a small amount white fish flaked(either cod, haddock non oily fish) it was always just enough top tempt him.

I personally think if his stools are firm at present stay on the diet you are giving and just add a really small amount extra something on top or hidden among the kibble, a non oily protien like white fish or plain chicken breast.

Also my vet told me to feed Ollie 3 small meals per day as more gentle on his tummy.

He also had flare ups out of the blue and I always used YuMOVE Digestive Care PLUS  they are sachets with powder in and sprinkled half sachet on 1 meal a day then again next day,  I did this with vets knowledge but bought from Amazon as vets was more expensive.

Hope this may help

Thanks for your helpful reply "jaysmum".

I'm reassured that Tango isn't the only one who finds the kibble boring! I'll certainly try white fish or chicken if/when he gets bored with the tuna I am currently using to tempt him. The 3 meal idea is also something I'll try gradually.

He had been on the standard Yumove senior tablet for a few years but the vet told me to stop them when his flare ups began to get worse. I will however look into the one you mention, tbh I have never heard of it.

Thanks again, all the best
Kevin

Hi Kevin

Just to say the Yumove senior tabs are mobilty type vitamin and Ollie was on those too.

The sachets are just for a tummy/bowel upset.  Must admit they seem to have several products in there Digestive Care Range the ones I get are Yumove Digestive Plus and has 6 sachets in box ?11.25

Hope it helps

Thank you for the clarification Julie, I'll talk to the vet about introducing this (and resuming the Yumove senior) next week.

All the best
Kevin
