cycstitis
« on: February 19, 2007, 01:01:39 AM »
Honey has had a second bout of cycstitis last week and vet says if she gets it again before 18 months she will send her off for tests/cultures for crystals? I saw a thread about Familial netropathy  i think it was called. do you think i should be worried? Is cystitis common and is there any way of avoiding it? If it is common is there anything I can do to avoid it?

I can only go by my little cats symptoms of having cystitis and that was straining to wee.

Having lost Harmy to Familial Nephropathy...he certainly never had cystitis ;) quite the opposite in fact, he wee'd for England :-\ I dont think I've read anywhere that cystitis is one of the symptoms  And I can really only advise you going on how Harmy was.

If you are worried, then ask your vet if he/she thinks a proteinurea test on Honeys wee to rule out FN would be a good idea. But I dont think you need to worry ;)

I have suffered from recurring cystitis since I was a child, but I now manage it by making sure I drink plenty of water. To help my little cat I mixed warm water into her cat meat to make sure she had some fluids

edited to add that from your posts regarding Honeys weight,it would suggest that you have no problem with FN. I could never get proper weight on Harmy. It was always put down to him being so active (and believe me he really was!), but from research, it is one of the symptoms. So the fact that Honey is supposedly overweight doesn't indicate FN.
It may be contributing to the cystitis tho

I have to say I dont understand that..cysititis is aggravated by acid urine ..in humans anyway... :-\ If I drink orange juice I'm in trouble ph34r.

Sorry it sounds like I'm being funny, but I am interested how that works with dogs ;)

I don't really understand it myself, but i used to have a cocker, Sunny, who would get blood in his urine, you could see it, but it wouldn't show on tests! :o Everything would test normal and antibiotics did nothing, it would come back after he finished the course. After countless trips to the vet and a small fortune on  urine samples, the vet told me to put him on Vit.C. It cleared him right up. The times I would get lazy and forget to keep him on it, it would come back, just putting him back on the Vit.C would put him right again.

I also had a male cat who developed bladder stones. He had to have the operation to widen his urethra as he was near death. After the op he developed them again and had to go back to have them removed. I decided to put him on Vit. C also after the 2nd op., and never had any trouble again.

Everyone I have recommended it to has had good sucess with it.

so its possible that it is neutralising the urine rather acidifying then. And you have very alkaline water :-\

That is really interesting :D I'm too busy at the mo, but it would be great to research ;)

I'm sure apple cider vinegar in the drinking water is supposed to help too?

You recommended I tried this with Peaches and when I asked the vet he said it was a good idea to keep her wee as acid as possible, the more acid the better apparently, he said it helps prevent both crystal growth and bacterial growth and vit c is a good safe way to do it, needless to say shes on her daily dose and fingers crossed she'll be ok now - but I don't get how it seems to be opposite to humans either.

thanks for the advice guys, she seems to be clearing up well, vets on Friday but I'm going to try the vit c thing as it can't hurt. Is it just ordinary vit c that you give them? The help and advice on here is brilliant. You're all stars!

Als othanks re setting my mind at rest that its nothing too nasty. I just panic when its the dog. I'm actually quite a calm person and with the kids I'm so together.........but Honey can't tell me whats wrong so it throws me. My kids n me would be devastated if anything happened to her. Even dh who moans about her constantly didnt even ask how much the vet bill was, just told us to get her fixed!! (and let her in his car for the journey!) he loves her really :luv: but who couldnt love a cocker eh?
Any ways thanks again

Cranberry juice is also very good I am told for cystitis, you can pour some in the dogs water bowl. I think you might be able to get it in tablet form too.
