HELP NEEDED!!! SHOULD I GO TO THE VETS???

Hi,

Just wondered if any one else has had this problem with their pups and could advise me what to do.

Frankie is now four months old and is a very happy and otherwise healthy dog, but we have noticed that the left side of his chin down to his neck is permanently wet.  First thing in the morning it is only just damp and as the day goes on it gets wetter and wetter until he is soaking wet.  It doesn't seem to bother him but I am getting a little concerned incase it should turn into a fungal infection and start to smell.  He drinks a lot throughout the day as there is always water available as both he and my four year old bitch are on dry food.

I have spoken to his breeder and she has never come up against anything like this before so is unable to help me any further at this moment although she is going to ask around for me.

He does have a deep fold on his bottom lip but it puzzles me as to why it is only on one side where the wetness occurs.  He is chewing like mad at the moment as he is getting his new teeth and this also makes him get wet.  I haven't noticed any drooling and his teeth and gums are healthy.

I would greatly appreciate any help you could give me and any advice at to whether you think I should take him to the vets.

I would - not as an emergency - but I would pop him along and get his mouth checked over. It could be related to his teeth or he could have excessive lip fold causing the salivation.

Indeed. But if he does and it's a big if - have excess lip fold then it's a simple and very successful op to reduce it. But it might not be what he has at all so try not to get ahead of yourself But I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Thanks so much for replying - so you don't think it's anything to worry about him being so wet all the time?
 Maybe I'm being a little too cautious with him, they're both my pride and joy and wouldn't want either of them to be in any discomfort.

Sorry Tasha - I don't think that's necessarily the right thing to do. The first is to find what the problem, if there is one is. Diet might be a factor - but might not. Changing diet should never be just a done thing - but one that is thought through for the full implications.

Hi again,

Just to say I am really reluctant to change his food as his coat is so shiny and so is my other bitch.  I have tried "wet" food in the past and have had trouble with dull coats bad breath and upset stomachs also it is much easier to scoop the poop when they are on dry food!!

I agree, take him to your vets as we're not experts and can't actually see what's going on here
