please could someone put me in the right place on COL!!
« on: February 14, 2007, 04:19:08 PM »
I read an article on the inherited problems that cockers can have, for the life of me I cannot find it.

It was here somewhere??  ph34r

I am trying to collate information together so I can research the medical problems.

Thanks
Heidi

Hmmm, don't know where the article you mention is but I can tell you the Big 3: PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy, juvenile and late onset), Familial Nephropathy (FN), and AIHA (Auto-immune Hemolytic Anemia)

Hip dysplasia is also a bit of an issue, but not as bad as it is in some breeds.

It's generally a very healthy breed

You're going to confuse most UK members talking about juvenile PRA ;) The three eye conditions in Cockers covered by the UK eye testing scheme for Cockers are GPRA (also known as prcd_PRA), CPRA and Glaucoma. GPRA is the most common form of PRA in the Cockers and is viewed as a late onset condition albeit with a very variable age range for development of the disease.

I am not sure I would put AIHA as an inherited problem for Cockers :-\  AIHA is indiscriminate in its victims, favouring pedigree and mixed breeds alike.  Genetic predisposition was named only as one of the 'likely' causes, along with stress and immunisation.  For me, the jury is out on this one ;)
