Hips and colour
« on: August 31, 2007, 04:44:30 PM »
I came across a text somewhere that said that in Brittain only (or mostly) solid coloured cockers have their hips tested. If that is so, is it because there are more hip problems in solid cockers than parti coloured ones?

nothing to do with colour all dogs under the Hip Scoring scheme should be tested if they are going to be used for breeding.  My dogs are scored for personal reference and for the breeders notes.

The hip scores of particoloured dogs that I have seen have all been pretty good, I have even seen a few 0/0 scores over the years.
There are far fewer dogs hipscored than there are eye tested and f.n tested over here. I think partly because there are no requirements by our K.C to health test breeding stock any testing is voluntary and there seems to be the perception among some people that H.D is seen in larger breeds, I'm not saying that is my view, just some of the comments I have heard.
Many more breeders are hip scoring now so I don't think it will be too long before there are a few dogs to choose from

Well, I did find it rather strange that there should be differences between colours, but who knows?  In Norway hips and eyes are to be tested in cockers. iif used for breeding.  Optigen testing is not so common here yet, more common in Sweden, I believe.  A bit strange that we don't follow you since the english cocker is, well, English....
