Finish lunch first - bum topic!
« on: March 14, 2008, 01:49:01 PM »
Not the most delicate of topics but, for the last week or so, Millie's poo has been liberally coated with a thick clear mucus.  Her food hasn't changed at all, her anal glands have been emptied (sorry - I did warn you to eat first) and she is fed exactly the same as our other cocker, Cassie, who is manuring the garden without the same gloss on it.  ::)  She otherwise seems absolutely fine and I am reluctant to take her to the vet if this is something normal or trivial, since she really hates going there.     All advice very, very welcome.  Thanks.

Im not eating lunch Annie ..so your ok  :005:
Biba had/has this and she suffers with colitis...her poos were always slimey/covered in a film of mucus and my vet wasnt very helpful...antibiotics was all they suggested..so did a bit of research and found that BARF/bone was good for controling it....there are other COL members that have more experience with this than me..but i just replaced one of Bibas meal with a raw bone and it does seem to do the trick..i also give her natural youghurt... could it be that

That's really useful.  Thank you very much.   :-*  On that basis I think I will get her looked over.  How did your vet diagnose the colitis (she'd never forgive me if it's an uppobumogram)?  ::)

thats what i mean by my vet not being very helpful  :-\..we explained her symptoms and he just said its colitis and she might grow out of it...which she hasn't ..and if it gets worse we can give her A/B..that was it  >:(
i think it quite hard to diagnosis with out lots of blood tests etc...Dennyk from COL has a lot of experience with getting a diagnosis for it..i think it took a very long time to get the diagnosis right
I didn't want to go down the A/B route as i heard it can make the condition worse in the long run  :-\
i would get the vets opinion though and you can always ask on here for advise on what people think about controlling it yourself  ;)
so far what i do for Biba seems to work ..so while it is i will stick with it  :D

if you do a search on here for colitis you should get Dennyk thread come up  ;)

Buddy has had two such poos this week and I am not sure what caused it or whether to get him seen.

He has been snaffling a lot of poo and bread recently so it could be that, but I have also been giving him the odd kibble meal so it could be that.

He is with the dog sitter over the weekend and on kibble so I will see  how he is when we get back.

I am worrying a bit now as I seem to remember that someone on here had a dog with a voracious appetite who was diagnosed with colitis and once a more appropriate doet was found the scavenging stopped.

This usually happens, when something irritates the stomach. Dry kibble can cause it as can a allergy to something they have eaten. If there is no blood I thnk I would just keep an eye on it. Has you dog been wormed.

Yes, she was wormed a few days into this.  I think I will still get her looked at as she has some other long term medical issues which may have some bearing but there's been a lot of good advice here, especially from Bibathediva.  I too have reservations about the AB route.  If I get anywhere, I'll report back as there may be something useful for Annette.  Meantime, thanks everyone for your help.  :-* :-*
