My new training location
« on: February 20, 2008, 02:31:02 PM »
None of you probably know that OH owns a garage just outside of town so Elmo comes to work with us 4 days a week (Im at home the rest of the week) Its a long day from 9.30 til 6 so i try to do as many short training sessions as possible and take him across to the park just next to work for a run around and ball throwing to break up his day. He also get a 1/2 hour play/training session in the morning and a walk at night. Im always worried he is gettng bored so today instead of going to the park which is a bit dull as its just a grassy park and never any other dogs around. Not even any trees or bushes ::) i decided to do some training in the car park. Our site is just under an acre with the cars lined up on 1/2 the site and quite near a road so a busy place with lots of distractions. (On the long line) we did some recall, some heel work in and out the cars, some down stay's and some "this ways". I hid my glove under a car a few times too and we did some "find its" :D

I think Elmo enjoyed it better as there was more to sniff at and it helps build up his tolerance to distractions :D

Anybody else use weird or unconventional areas to train?

I trained my three in the shopping center car park while the OH went to spend all my money :lol2:

Yes I took Alfie to car parks to work on his focus and also to Princes Street Gardens in the city centre last summer, it's full of people sitting and walking around, having picnics, playing frisbee, other dogs, pigeons, squirrels etc. and there are buses going past constantly on Princes Street itself. I took him in there for socialisation as a puppy as well. It worked really well for the focus/self control training and he was very good, we shared an ice cream afterwards to celebrate and because I had him with me I couldn't go into the shops to spend any money  :005:
