Mabel's a homing pigeon
« on: May 29, 2008, 10:29:55 PM »
hi all

I was out for a walk round the local block tonight (8 ish) and as she always pulls on the way home, whichever route we go localy, I walked throught the park at the back of my house, I had mabel on a houseline (shortish longline) and she was doing a bit of fetch etc over short distances trying to wear her out a bit, when the houseline slipped off my wrist as she charged after the ring I was throwing

I immediatly called her back (normaly reasonable recall) to which she ignored totaly, grabbed the ring and set off down the field at a great pace of knots ....

I tried calling and whistling her but no prevail, so I set of at full sprint to catch her before she got to the alley that leads to my road
I managed to close the gap but she turned down the alley before I could stand on the lead or get to her and block her, well ... the little homing pigeon only ran down the alley, turned left at the end, ran down the pavement with me sprinting behind like a loon, turned the corner then ran up our drive and sat on the porch step like she was the best thing since sliced bread.

I was fuming, knackered, concerened about all the bad things that could of happened (berating myself) but overall happy she was safe

needless to say I ordered a 15m longline today which I will attach to my belt !

anyone else got a homing pigeon, is this normal ?

Thanks
Phil

Aww Mabel being a little naughty eh.  :005: :luv:

This is exactly what I can see Alfie leading up to, hence a rapid purchase of long line a week or so ago.

Your heart must have been in your mouth when she took off, at least she got home safely.  :luv:

Have you caught your breath back yet.  :005:

Thank doG she was OK, Phil, my heart would be in my mouth even though I'm positive mine could find their way back from the park and would probably go back to the car on most of our walks.  >:D little devil isn't she  ::)

That was luck.

This happened to us one day on the way visit the OH's mum and dad and I dropped Sam's lead.  Off he ran like a whippet, down the street, up the stairs at the house and sat outside the front door as if to say 'what took you'  >:(

Glad Mabel made it home safe.

I am wondering how long it wil be before it trails in poo and then getting it all over our hands.  ph34r

We have a steep drive and I used to let them off at the end of the walk and they would both run up the path and wait for me to open the gate perfect puppies, then one day he decided to chase the cat next door, and in the process found the cats diner bowl at the front door. I could also open the car door, go and open the gate and say get in the car they would make a lot of noise but bolt for the car and be sitting in the back seat waiting for me. Now, times have changed the lead stays on until we reach the gate, I got tired of catching the little buggars and running round my neighbours garden at 7.30 in the morning >:( >:(  and I've changed cars and they now travel in a crate I have a Ford Escape 4 x 4 which is great no more dog hairs in the back seat but it is a little high and I prefer to carry them into the crate.
