nightmares
« on: December 18, 2008, 02:14:16 PM »
milly was sleeping on the bed this morning and she was having a nightmare.    i know that dogs do this, but i wondered if its  safe to gently wake them up - or is it best to leave them to get through it themselves?

it seems so sad.

Experiments on cats have shown that if they deprived of REM sleep (dreaming) over time, they develop psychotic behaviour!!!  I would guess the same is true of dogs if they are continually woken, but once or twice won't harm, I expect

My OH talks very gently to Purdey and puts his hand near her nose so his smell reassures her - it nearly always calms her during a nightmare!

Last night she was lying on the sofa having a really lively one - she was properly woofing in her sleep! Her season started this week - I wondered if that had anything to do with her extra-vivd nightmares?

How do you know they are "nightmares"?  My two woof and twitch in their sleep - I've always thought that they are dreaming about playing and/or chasing, not being chased !  ph34r

ah   milly has her chasing dreams as well!!!    she twitches and moves her paws and sometimes gives little barks.  those are "nice" dreams!!!!

her nightmare was different.   she was really crying.     i will be listening out for more and monitor the situation.

My Mundy often chases rabbits in his sleep.  Barking and twittiching - feet going 90 to the dozen.  I leave him to the chase.  Jenni on the other hand screams in her sleep.  She is terrified.  I could never leave her to suffer the pain that is haunting her.  I always wake her.  I believe she is reassured as her tail gives a couple of flops and she drops back to sleep again.
I love my dogs.  They make it worth getting out of bed in the morning.

I just put my hand on them nice and gentle, and they quiet down - must say though the nice dreams they have look super from the outside!!

Spike also whines & whimpers in his sleep; I'm pretty sure he's chasing wabbits!! ;)

That's actually preferable to Domino who sometimes howls really loudly in his sleep & has been known to wake us up in the middle of the night!! :shades:

hehe, I agree you can tell sometimes when they're good dreams! Riley's front paws make running motions and he sniffs alot. Othertimes he's been known to growl :p cheeky
