Colour heritage
« on: December 17, 2008, 02:32:42 PM »
Hi I have 2 questions.

1. A solid red male (carries only red) is bred to a blue roan female (from 2 blue roan parents), will all the puppies be red or will there also be blacks?

2. A solid black male that carries red and black and tan, is bred to a blue roan female (from 2 blue roan parents), will all the puppies be black, or will there also be reds, and black/tan?

Question 1 : No. It will depend on whether the blue roan parent carries the red/orange gene. If not, then all the puppies will be solid black (if the red male does not carry the particolour gene). If he does carry the parti gene, then some pups will be blue roan. If the blue roan parents does carry the red/orange gene, some pups should be red/gold, some black (either solid or some parti if the male carries the parti gene as before)

Question 2: As with question 1, it depends on what colour/s the blue roan female carries. You will only get reds and black/tans if the blue roan also carries both these genes. With any recessive coat colour (like red or liver or "and tan") or recessive coat pattern (roan or "and white"), both parents must carry the respective genes to produce it in their puppies.

Question 1 : No. It will depend on whether the blue roan parent carries the red/orange gene He does not. If not, then all the puppies will be solid black (if the red male does not carry the particolour gene) He does not. If he does carry the parti gene, then some pups will be blue roan. If the blue roan parents does carry the red/orange gene, some pups should be red/gold, some black (either solid or some parti if the male carries the parti gene as before)

Question 2: As with question 1, it depends on what colour/s the blue roan female carries.Only blue roan I believe. You will only get reds and black/tans if the blue roan also carries both these genes.Female does not carry red or tan I think, but her grandmother was orange roan. With any recessive coat colour (like red or liver or "and tan") or recessive coat pattern (roan or "and white"), both parents must carry the respective genes to produce it in their puppies.

So I guess all the puppies will be black :)

But now does the Red male (1) not carry black, only red, and Solid is dominant over roan (isnt it?), will there still no puppies be red?

No because in Cockers black (a blue roan is a black particolour) is dominant over red so both parents must carry the red gene to produce it. If the blue roan does not carry red, she cannot produce red puppies even if the male is red.
