Question about seasons...again!
« on: May 04, 2009, 01:35:02 PM »
I know very little about dog seasons! Human ovulation etc, yes! Been there done that!! :shades:

I know that girls bleed/spot for 10 days and are receptive to male attention for the next 10 days. But my question is this!

Is it given that a dog in season who spends all her time with a male dog will become pregnant or is it a hit and miss affair like human reproduction? I only ask as the potential mum to be has just come into season and wondered if my excitement is a little premature!
Could it not actually happen?

I would ask my breeder but don't want to hassle her too much until we're on the home straight!!  :005:

I hope people can help you out and that you are soon waiting for a little Marty brother or sister.  ( From Martys breeder and his parents etc )

No breeder will usually let a bitch in season spend all her time with a male dog - it wouldn't be fair on either as both would get totally exhausted ;) If a breeder owns both the bitch and the intended stud dog, then they will be mated together at the appropriate time (probably on at least two occasions). An experienced breeder and experienced stud dog will know when the time is right and after that, it's just a matter of keeping fingers crossed as nothing is ever a given when it comes to breeding dogs or humans :D

Thanks Jane. I must stress my breeder is excellent and I'm sure they are not together all the time. It's just my naivety that made me put that sentence in! But yes the dogs do live together....probably not married though!!  :005:
