Avoid or cure Grass Seeds?

Hey

There is a lot of grass seeds about at the minute, but I wonder if you should completely avoid them and prevent your dog walking on the grass, or allow them to go on the grass and just check the ears and feet after every walk?

I just check feet and ears (plus don't forget their armpits as well as I've been scuppered by that one before on both mine ) - Ruby & Wilf love romping in grassland and you just can't avoid it on some walks even if you take the road (plus as I'm helping regenerate a meadow I frequently go up there with the dogs to see what's now growing there and it is their favourite place)

I give them a check over after each walk - only takes 10 minutes.

Well I avoid at the moment, normal lawn type grass areas are fine like playing fields, country park fields etc, its the long grassy fields which are a problem and where you get those horrible sticky dart things.   I would rather prevent than end up with Indie having an operation but thats just me.    Some areas are hard to avoid but depends where you live.    

Where I live I can just go on open playing fields so its not a problem but I try to avoid the areas at the end which are really long grass and have the dart type and call her away if she tries to go in there.

If you can't help but avoid those areas then keep checking him all over, I still check Indie when I come back from a walk and she still has things caught up in her.

Same here, I tend to avoid fields with long grass in at the moment as there are so many seeds but we are lucky that we have lots of walks in woods/shorter grass etc where grass seeds are not a problem.    It is impossible to avoid them altogether though so I do check Coco over for seeds (and ticks) every day

Avoidance is impossible for us because seeded grass is everywhere, it is even growing along the pavements and in the garden 

I check my dogs regularly, but accept that it is a risk we have to take  Molo had a couple of seeds removed from his ears under sedation in his first couple of years, but since then (touch any wood I can see) we have been fortunate and I don't take any specific precautions

I can't avoid it here, we walk in forests and heathland everyday and my two need the running so I just make sure I check them regularly. Dave is my problem one though not Normy, you will have less problems with Ollies short coat though so I wouldn't worry too much, just keep an eye on him.

Thanks guys. I check Ollie's ears after each walk, and between each of his toes. I've also cut back the hair on his feet so it's easier to see seeds if they are there. Our main field where he goes off lead has been mown, so that's great, but the grass verges have seed heads, so I try to let him on them.

Make sure you check his armpits too - both times Coco has had them that is where they were

And his boy bits too.     Our vet warned us about this one year when Milo got a grass seed in his armpit.  Apparently, he'd just removed one from a dog's bladder and he says there's only one way it could have got there.  Ouch.
