Mobile Broadband
« on: March 15, 2009, 05:45:46 PM »
Can anyone recommend the best network for mobile broadband?

OH and I are off up north next week and will need internet access at some point (OH trying to arrange a stag) and not really sure which one is best.

Any advice given would be greatly appreciated.  :D

Do you want to use it when you get back?

Most Macdonalds have free wifi available so you could use a wifi enabled laptop without going to the expense of mobile broadband.  There are also other 'hotspots' that you can use.

This link may help.  http://www.myhotspots.co.uk/

We only want to use when we are away.

There doesn't seem to be any wi-fi hotspots where we are going.

I hadn't realised how much these had proliferated until I got my new mobile phone which has wifi built in; these "hotspots" are everywhere  :005:

There are a few websites you can use to see if there are any public wifi networks in the area you are going - and if you are staying in a hotel, or even a small guest house or holiday cottage, many offer wifi either free or at a hourly/daily cost  ;)

It's a log cabin we are staying in, so no sure if they offer wi-fi.  Will ask when we check in tomorrow, if we haven't bought a dongle by then!

I guess that you have already sorted this. I just wanted to add that many people have 3.5g enabled phones that they can use as a modem with out the need for taking out another contract.

Please check to see if this is allowed by your telco- I am with T-mob and have web and walk pro tariff on my phone which allows me to use it as a modem for about £8 pm (as well as allowing me to access the network on my phone). this is cheaper than a seperate dongle and contract.

I have a windows mobile phone so I can create a "hotspot" to enable more than one pc to share the connection or i can use bluetooth or usb.

The downside is that you can't make phone calls at the same time and battery life.

Iphone users are not allowed to do this (and many other things) under any circumstances. That said they can do it if they "jail break" their phones first.

I'm using a dongle writing this in France.  You can get the same from Vodaphone - costs £29.00 - with 30 hours of surfing.  I'm using the SFR dongle - a USB stick. It works quite well.
