Dry Eyes....found something that really helps.
« on: February 01, 2010, 08:12:42 PM »
Hi to all of you who have doggies suffering from dry eye.

We have tried everything, and still use optimune plus other things.

My husband recently came back from the chemist with a new Optrex product called Optrex ActiMist (Eye spray).  I have to say that I complained that he had wasted money, because it has to be sprayed onto closed eyes.  Anyway, we held Freya's lids closed and sprayed.........this was 4 days ago.

I am so delighted with the results.  Her eye condition has honestly improved.  It has reduced the gunk considerably.

It states that it penetrates the lid to form a protective film over the eye.  The manufacturers say that if it is sprayed onto the eye itself, no harm is done, it just stings a bit.

If anyone is at the stage of despair.....just try it.  I feel really delighted.  And, I am not imagining things.....friends have commented too, on the difference in Freya's eyes.

It is expensive....but, it is good.

No longer in my arms, but forever in my heart, my girls at the Bridge, Lily and Freya. Xx

Thank you for posting this :D

William was only diagnosed recently and, so far, the Optimmune has made a big improvement and he has no gunk at all in the corner of his eyes, which look a lot better than before. But I know Optimmune sometimes doesn't seem to work so well after a while so it's good to know of something else that helps.

Elaine......please keep it in mind.

Freya got a lot of relief from Optimune at first, but slowly but surely it is less and less effective.

I can't tell you how delighted we are with this.............hopefully the effects will last.  Can't tell at this moment.  But, just wanted to tell everyone who has the same problem with their dogs.  It is so sad to see the discomfort they are obviously in as a result of this condition. :luv:

Purdey has dry eye & I'm using Maxitrol eye drops at the mo. because the optimune seemed to stop working. The maxitrol seem to be doing really well but good to know there is an alternative that may help (it must be so very uncomfortable to have dry eyes & anything that bings relief is worth it) .... & really pleased to hear that it's helping Freya  :luv: - thanks for posting  ;)

(can I just ask though....is it OK to use it on dogs eyes aswell as humans?? silly question probably but just wanted to check  ph34r )

It is not a silly question at all.  It is a sensible question.

My friend is a pharmacist, and although I shouldn't say it, she recommended Optrex eye drops some time ago, but said that I should say they were for my dog when purchasing them.

She said that the eye preparations for humans or no different in content to those prescribed for dogs............just that the doggie forms cost about 3 times as much money.

The Optrex spray certainly seems to be doing some good.....so, I will stay with it for a while, and keep praying that she continues to get the relief.  She is even wanting to go for walks now...........I think it is because her sight is improved because of having less gunk.  Although we were cleaning her eyes 4 or 5 times each day, the gunk still restricted her view.

thanks for that & good to know. When we need artificial tears for Purdey, I get viscotears from the chemist (but don't tell them they're for my dog  :005: )

*When Purdeys eyes where really bad, I'm sure the continual wiping made them sore too  :'(      so if this product can help ..... brilliant  ;)

When my old dog had is thats what my vet said too, and I used to get all her eye drops from the pharmacy.

We found however that we couldn't say it was for a dog because they just wouldn't sell it to us, so we always said it was for a human after that and we went from about £15 a month at the time (consultation plus prescription) to about 99p per month for her eyes from chemist. (same stuff).

Keli used to have Viscotears from the chemist. Quite cheap and seemed to work well on him.

Maxitrol is a steroid and unless really required best avoided I think.

Again, mustn't tell the pharmacist its for a dog as they are not allowed to sell over the counter stuff for canines. Bloomin' stupid really as as horrible as it is, all medicines are tested on animals!

You're right Mel, Maxitrol does contain steroids but we are using them under medical supervision (opthalmologist prescribed  ;) ) & she has to have monthly checks to make sure all is ok. The main problem is, if the dog developed an ulcer in the eye because the Maxitrol can aggrivate the problem. Wouldn't use them if we didn't have to but Purdey's eyes are responding well to the treatment..... Thanks for caring though  :-*

Sorry my lovely on reading this again I realise it might of sounded a bit sharp. Maxitrol is very good for the right thing. Its actually a registered human eye treatment.
