Crate Help!!!!
« on: February 16, 2010, 07:16:01 PM »
Hey all,

We are hopefully picking up our 6 month old cocker this week and need some advice.
All my previous dogs have been rescue and a lot older.

A lot of people have suggested having a crate in the house (kitchen/diner) as well as a bed for the dog in the living room, so the dog has her own space away from everyone and her own space with the rest of us. I have never used a crate and wanted to know whether this was a good idea?

Whats the best way of transporting a dog? Is a crate/cage essential?

Thanks in advance

Hi Dan,
There have been lots of threads on the forum about crate training.  If you go to the discussion forum and type 'crate training' in the search, lots of different threads will come up and you can read all the advice that other members have given.
I have used a crate with my previous GSP and now with my two working cockers and I strongly recommend them - don't know how I managed without them. ;)
Good luck with your new puppy, I hope to see photos of him soon.
I have also added a link about crate training  ;)

Is the dog use to a crate? As 6 months is later than normal to introduce one.

I have a crate but its used for transport  OH not a fan of crates maybe because we never had them yrs ago and all has been fine

Looking forward to the pics  :luv:

I suppose it depends on how far you're transporting and what your vehicle will allow. for short distances (to the park,e tc) Ozzy goes in the boot of our Focus where we have a barrier (he'd be over the top like a shot without it  >:D), but when we go on holiday we have a large people carrier and take one of the seats out and put his crate in for him.  He'll eventually lie down and go to sleep in that.

Best thing if he's not used to a crate would be to use it in the house first.  Whichever method you use I would definitely suggest some sort of barrier or restrainer otherwise he'll be wanting to drive!    ;)
