One of the things I think you must decide is
when you want a puppy. The first puppy is on the ground and ready to go; the other, it doesn't sound like it is known for sure if the bitch is even pregnant, in which case you could be waiting up to a year for another breeding (if the breeder does one) Also it is not known yet how many puppies there would be, and unfortunately, there can be survival issues early on.
If you are willing to wait, in case this mating didn't take; then yes, we often wait for puppies of certain breeding.

Other than it seeming to you that there were a lot of dogs at the first breeders, were there any other issues that you were not comfortable with? I do have to say that a couple of my dogs came from conditions that were; shall we say less than ideal; but have turned out to be wonderful dogs. It all depends on your comfort level.
