Keeping a diary is a great idea.  I was wondering if there is some kind of cycle going on.  One trainer did suggest it may be to do with being spayed early and suggested some herbal remedy - are spayed girlies still subject to the same mood swings as non-spayed?

I know a dalmation that has been spayed and still has mood swings. Te vets suspect that not all the oviarian tissue was removed. Apperently its common in certain "deep chested" breeds. It causes her to have fake seasons. She cant get pregnant and doesnt give off smells but she goes through all the psychological stages, including fake pregnancys and grumpyness (bordering on aggression)  towards other dogs. She was spayed after 2 seassons so it had nothing to do with her being done early. They use the DAP stuff on her Usually a collar soaked in the drops.

TTouch would definitely be worth trying as well as it's great for helping them be more relaxed, and it gets them into a thinking state so that they are able to learn to respond to situations more appropriately rather than reacting out of instinct. It's also really good for building a trusting bond between you and your dog and will help YOU to relax as well as it's quite a meditative thing to do. PM me if you'd like any further info.

I've posted about this before with my Weim - she was spayed at about 6 months for medical reasons by her previous owners and because it was an emergency, she wasn't done at an ideal time. She isn't ever aggressive towards humans but is generally a bit moody and huffy - someone at Weim rescue suggested it could be because she was spayed when her hormones were heightened and that can affect their long term hormonal balance??? Not sure how accurate that is. She is also prone to being extra moody occasionally for about 3-4 weeks, she isn't aggressive but has a serious chip on her shoulder and won't do a damn thing for anyone unless she absolutely HAS to..

I don't know for sure but if I had to say, based on her behaviour, spayed bitches can still be affected by season hormones..

For no reason in particular I had a chat with my vet about this the last time I saw him and he confirmed that it is documented in the veterinary press that spayed bitches can still be prone to cyclical variations in mood/behaviour.  Can't recall exactly what he said, but think some of the postulated causes include possible residue of tissue left behind and time in the cycle when spaying was done - hormones' effect on/by the pituitary gland in the brain or something

Spaying removes the production of progesterone, which is a natural calming hormone and a Serotonin up lifter so no wonder I have a not so calm as she used to be bitch - maybe she needs some HRT
