I've only just seen this, and I'm glad he's stopped but I was wondering if the behaviour had anything to do with the christmas lights twinkling?  My dog Phoebe loves lights (and shadows) and although its usually something she is more likely to do in the summer the constant twinkling of the christmas tree lights may help put her in the mood to watch lights as there flickering can be quite distracting.  Just a thought.
