Puppy colour help
« on: January 31, 2012, 12:04:45 PM »
hi everyone,

We chose our puppy on Friday and were really excited!!!

Just a question about colours - if a puppy is born black and white - will he always turn blue roan or can some stay black and white?

Our puppy is so far black and white but should be a blue roan soon!

Also what kind of age does the colouring change? and when does the colouring stop changing?

Thank you x

Hello, welcome on your potential new arrival.  How old are the puppies?

I have one of each - a black & white ticked and a light blue roan. There is a thread on here if you search where there is a discussion around how can you tell the difference and pictures have been posted.  Breeders can normally tell early on if the puppies are blue roans or black & white ticked.

With my boys Charlie was definitely black & white ticked, he had pretty pink paw pads as a puppy that have darkened over time, but he was white with black patches and the ticking became more evident over a few months. Dexter was definitely a roan, when I picked him at 6 weeks his paw pads were black, he had visible roan on his legs, face and a little on his back, his roan has darkened over time.

Hope the link works. Should update a more recent pic. Bingley is coming up to 5 months. He is either black and white ticked or light blue roan. There seems to be a fine line between the 2.
