Jumping Puppy

Polly is now 5 months, and gorgeous, except...
She jumped the original stairgates to chase the cats, so I bought an extra tall (1m10) stairgate.
She just jumped that one to chase the cat... >:D

Any ideas???

Muffin's 5 months old also and recently she's been a little bleeder for jumping up and grabbing anything left on tables or work surfaces in the kitchen... She's not quite mastered jumping the gate yet tho thank goodness!!  :o :005:

Train the cat not to tease polly  :005: :005: I dont know what to suggest as we are lucky Willow had never attempted to jump our gate  :luv:

Charlie didn't jump the gate but found out he can hook his paw through the bars and shake it open...   None of the others ever bothered! 

He has an incredible grip too, Many's the time I've had to fight to close it behind me to go upstairs without him! ;)

The gate is only useful as a management tool. Now that your puppy has found a way around it you're going to have train the dog not to chase the cat.  Start doing some supervised training sessions that involve teaching the puppy what behaviors are appropriate around the cat. 

My own puppy can easily clear the baby gates and her exercise pen walls so we make sure that there is something to keep her occupied while she is contained (kongs, chews, another dog), and we've trained her that she is not allowed to exit these designated areas on her own will or even once the gates or pen wall has been taken down unless given a specific command.

cockers are very intelligent dogs and if they want to get someone very little will stop them (Taz has found his way out of at least 3 "fully enclosed gardens"  >:D

we had a stairgate when he was a pup, took him about a week to work out how to open the gate (standing on it to push it under the clip), so when i had to nip out for 20 minutes once, i wrapped an old collar around the gate and the stair bannister so that it wouldnt open.  Imagine my surprise when i returned home to find both dogs upstairs with the collar chewed through - it had took him less than 20 mins to work out what was stopping the gate opening and doing something about it >:D >:D

I think it is just persistence with the cat.  I have got mine to the stage now that if she sits still they leave her alone, but if she runs then still chase.  Lots of treats when they leave her alone as worked best.
