Puppy harness
« on: April 11, 2012, 04:59:03 PM »
Miya will be ready for life on the outside in the next couple of weeks. She has a collar and lead but even in the back garden she does'nt like the lead
When the big day comes I would like to train her to walk without pulling and moving in every direction but the one were supposed to take.

Anyone got views on harnesses :shades:

Thanks, Mel.

We had always used collar and leads on Pippa and Barney but decided to try Pippa with a T-Touch harness a few weeks ago as she does pull quite a bit on the lead (our fault because we don't walk them on lead much and because we usually walk both dogs together which makes training her harder).  The harness has helped, but I don't think it's a cure-all.  I do think it is better for Pippa though as she is less likely to injure herself when she strains against it.  Really, we need to put more time into training her with the collar to walk nicely.  If you can do that, you won't need a harness.  We trained Barney by taking a few steps back every time he pulled and saying "nicely".  He still tries to get away with pulling when both dogs are on lead together, but is great on his own.  Having read this post back, I think my weekend mission will be some long lead training walks for Pippa!

Thanks for the advice.

Think we'll start with a little harness and see how she progresses :D

The advice from my breeder was to keep lead work as training whilst they're little.

So when mine were pups I would drive them to an open space and go for a walk.  And did lead work at home as a separate short training session, started in the hallway, then progressed to back garden, then onto the road outside etc etc.  Not until 9/10 months was I actually walking them any distance on a lead.

I should say though that even now mine both know how to "heal" and walk nicely on a loose lead but I can never get them to do it on the way to do something exciting, which in my experience with Cockers is just about everything.  :005:

Yes, they are lively right enough :005:

Thanks for the tip, we've started her off indoors just to get used to it.

I use a harness because Charlie wasn't happy walking. Once hes fully happy walking, we will test out the collar and lead (he does use it when walking to my parents, 2 doors away lol)
My beautiful little boy Charlie :)

I have a red dingo harness for Lola which I find great,  :luv:
Lottie had a few,  I tried other types but seemed to get matts under her armpits with them   :-\
