Henry's First Night
« on: July 09, 2012, 09:01:23 AM »
Well, it wasn't too bad. Put him in his crate at about 11.15pm in its place in the sitting room, when he was already sleepy. We then went to bed, and of course he started yelping at 12.15am. I got up and took him out and he had a poo and a wee, then put him back in his crate and tried to go to bed. He yelped and whined loudly for about 10 minutes. It was pretty heart-breaking plus I was worried about the neighbours. Anyway, I didn't give in and he stopped eventually.
He started whining very briefly at 5am, but I ignored it and he stopped immediately. And then again at 6.20am which was wake-up time. No mess in his crate, which is good!
Very much enjoyed his breakfast of kibble and scrambled egg. Currently playing with squeaky too, although fortunately he can't make it squeak yet! Off to vet for first check-up later.

Sounds like you did incredibly well, it's so difficult to hear a little puppy cry for your attention and to keep ignoring them. Henry's first night sounds identical to Lucy's except I gave in 3 times to her cries and ended up sleeping on the sofa with her  ph34r
You honestly are doing the right thing by ignoring his whining, this was the only method that resulted in Lucy sleeping silently in her crate downstairs throughout the night. Although now she has made her way to sleeping under the duvet in my bed with me and OH  ph34r
Hope the check up goes well for you both  :D

Bless him, for his first night he did brilliantly  :luv: :luv: It's almost heartbreaking to hear them cry and not go to them but you have to stick to it, then before you know it, they settle down and sleep all night.  Keep up the good work, it will be worth it.

Thanks for the reassurance guys! And I spoke to the neighbours whose bedroom is on the other side of the wall where he was crying and they heard nothing, which is a relief (plus they're dog people, so wouldn't mind!). Have had a bit of problem with downstairs neighbours though today, as we're on the first floor and they said they don't want us using the front garden for his toilet as they think it will smell (not dog people!). I've told them it's only for 2.5 weeks until he's had his jabs and he's safe to go out further, so hopefully they'll be okay with that. Grrrrr!

That sounds like a good first night. Its so easy to give in when they whine but it pays off if you dont in the long run!

It was a lot more than whining - it sounded as if he was howling the place down (through my half-in ear-plugs!).
Just about to go to bed and hope it's a bit better tonight - I had the worst night's sleep in a long time (I couldn't actually sleep while he was making that noise even though I didn't go to him) and I had to have a nap this afternoon (during which time Henry decided to pee on the carpet!!). Once he stopped yowling last night I was then worried whether he was okay (had he choked on something, for example?!). I imagine people with newborn babies have it a lot worse, but this is my first experience of responsibility of someone so tiny and helpless!

Last night was not so good. Well, he was actually fine from about midnight until 5am. Then he just wouldn't stop yowling. So I gave in, took him downstairs for a poo, then back to bed, where he continued to yowl and bark for about half an hour before I decided I'd go and sleep on the sofa near him. Only I found that he'd pooed in his crate, and was clearly very upset. Bits of poo had been turfed out of the crate on to the carpet (fortunately good consistency!!). Vetbed and blanket now in washing machine, puppy now soundly asleep in the cardboard box we picked him up in, Sophie very tired! Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Aww the thing is he is probably trying to hold in as he doesnt want to go in his bed but is desperate and has had the accident. A rule of thumb generally as to how long they cant hold bladder is an hour per month plus one. So if Henry is say 2 months then he is doing well for three hours. They really dont like to soil their bed and it is really upsetting for them if they have to. I also took him out to try for a wee about every half hour during the day , always saying "be quick" when he started weeing, now when I say "be quick" he will go if he is ready to.

In the early days when Riley was home at 9 weeks I put him down at 10pm.  I got myself up (before he woke) at about 2-3am, took him out and he always wee,d and poo,ed then popped in right back in his crate, if he ever cried then I knew he didnt need to go as he had just been.
Its hard to judge but if  you take him out and he goes to the toilet then at least you know its not that.

We would get up about 2-3am  then about 6am and only twice got a wee in the crate, never a poo.

Saying that now, he is 21 weeks and still up about 5am from 9.30- 10pm the night before.
