Puppy/Adult coat
« on: September 13, 2012, 08:22:48 PM »
Hello - I'm new! (I made my intro thread int he introduction section  :lol2:

Anyway, I know ever breed of dog is different, and indeed, every dog is different. But when can I expect my 10 month old puppies fur to grow properly?

He's had the snip (I know neutering makes a difference in bitches) and does have little wisps on his legs, bum and tail - but not the full cocker feathering.

His dad was a seriously curly cocker and his mum quite straight - and he takes after his mum tremendously - but both had thick coats.

I had expected him to be longer haired by now but then I read they don't get their full coats till they're 2 - is this true? He has a slightly curly 'wig' on his back but the rest of him is quite short haired - is this normal?  :-\

Any advice/experience would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you :)

Helen

Hello and welcome to COL :D

I've just read your other post so I know your boy is a lemon and white worker. Workers often have a lot less coat than show types, especially when it comes to feathering. I know you've said both his parents had thick coats, but did they have much feathering? Do you know if they were in full coat or if either of them had been clipped when you saw them?

The fact that he's been castrated is very likely to affect his coat, especially as he must have been quite young when he had the operation. By now his adult coat should have come through either fully or not far off fully, so it might be that what you're seeing now is his adult coat or the closest he's going to get to an adult coat following his castration.

It would be lovely to see some photos of him and might help people to tell you more about his coat and if it's likely to change much

I do have a better photo but I can't remember where it's saved!! He does have feathering but not on his full body like his parents did. They were in full coat when we saw them, they hadn't been clipped for a couple of months.

I don't mind, we love him for who he is, not what he looks like!   but just wondered if, at 10 months he has stopped growing.. bless his feathered socks

Bailey's coat changed drastically after being fixed. His coat was smooth and grew out long and straight. Not so after the op. He now has a curly carpet growing on him.

Our previous girly, Saffron, didn't grow a lot of fur... just some light feathering and a sleek short coat a lot like your doglets. That's how she stayed.
