itchy skin on both sides of body!
« on: September 24, 2012, 09:29:04 AM »
Hi girls & guys,

Rosie keeps scratching both sides of her body.
She is up to date with Frontline no fleas on her or lumps, spots etc.
Rosie has E.P.I. on enzyme for that & has been for past 3yrs no prob!
Also has dry eye & on optimmune & gel tears for that.
She is a Tri (black & tan) colour, I wondered if she was just getting hot & itchy?
Maybe when we walk on footpaths grasses etc.
The vet couldn't see anything on skin or fur. Help?

Julie, Rosie :luv: & Faye :luv:

What food does Rosie eat?

William used to be itchy quite a lot and was also prone to lip fold and ear infections. He improved quite a lot when I put him on Burns (he'd been on James Wellbeloved and Arden Grange previously) and then improved dramatically when I changed him to a raw diet. Even his Dry Eye requires less Optimmune since the change of diet. I'm a committed raw feeder now but if I had to go back to kibble it would be Burns.

I'm not saying it's definitely Rosie's diet that's the problem, but it's always worth thinking about diet as a possible factor when a dog is itchy.

Rosie & Faye are both on Burns chicken & brown rice.
Feeding a raw diet sounds like hard work?? What would you feed William then, would it be the same every day?
Rosie must have low protein food as she has been having training from Ben at Many Tears & it is working so well.
Rosie & my family are so much happier with the new trained Rosie!!

A raw diet isn't difficult; that was the mean reason it took me so long to try Charlie with it - it is not hard. You can do a DIY raw diet which yes requires more effort, but you can buy raw food all prepared, so all you need to do is defrost and serve. I have tupperware containers that I defrost the food in, when I take it out I wash them then put tomorrows dinner in it, and put it in the fridge. That is the only extra effort it requires than "normal" food.

Charlie has never been a big eater or bothered about food, but he does like his raw food which is great. It's lovely to see him enjoy his dinner.
My beautiful little boy Charlie :)

Feeding a raw diet isn't hard work, as said above, although it does require a bit of extra planning (not least remembering to get stuff out of the freezer) and a bit of thought to provide a varied diet.

But if you're otherwise happy with Burns why not just try a different variety? My 2 were on duck and rice when they were on Burns and my friend's Golden Retriever was on that variety too after having mild tummy upsets on a different variety, which may have been chicken, but I'm not sure.
