Uveitis
« on: November 08, 2012, 01:57:19 PM »
Hi, this is my first post and I was hoping that someone can help.

My golden cocker spaniel, Alph, was brought for a walk last night, and when we came home both his eyes were very red and swollen. This got progressively worse until both his eyes closed over. We brought him to the vet first thing this morning and the vet said that he has uveitis in both eyes and a touch of conjunctivitis and gave us 3 sets of eye drop medication. She said that it was unusual that he has this in both eyes and she wants to see him again on Saturday to see if his condition improves. Alph is 2 years old and has never had any problems with his sight before this. I have read up somewhat on uveitis and am worried as this can lead to glaucoma and eventually blindness  :'(

Has anybody experienced a similar condition? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Richard, sorry to hear about your problem. Sadly I don't have any advice, but agree it seems to be potentially quite serious. Hopefully the drops will sort him out quickly

Hi Richard

Barney is being treated for Uveitis.  It started a week last Monday (see thread Really worried about Barney UPDATED again).  I took him straight to the vet on Monday afternoon because he had the same symptoms as Alph and on Tuesday he referred us to the eye clinic in Leominster (we're in Cardiff so it's not too far away) where he was diagnosed with uveitis.  We were also told that it was unusual to have it in both eyes and could be a sign that Barney had problems with his auto immune system or was fighting a really bad infection - he also had a raised lymph node but no conjunctivitis so not quite the same as Alph.  He's been having 2 sets of eye drops.  Hope Alph improves very quickly.

Ruby had uveitis when she got a thorn embedded in her eye - thankfully it cleared up with the eye drops my vet gave me. My vet did see me every day though to ensure it was healing well and at one point was going to send me to the eye clinic but in end she didn't need to.

She did eventually get glaucoma but in her case it was primary glaucoma, i.e. she was predisposed to it (congenital) no matter what happened to her before.

Hope Alph's eye gets better soon

If in doubt go back to your vet sooner rather than later with any concerns you may have.

Brought Alph back to the eye specialist in the vets today and he is doing very well. He still has some swelling behind the Iris inside in his eyes and he is still on his medication until Thursday, when he will go back to the Specialist. He is back to his old self again which is great
