Cocker Skin Problems
« on: December 21, 2012, 10:03:26 PM »
Back last year my cocker had skin problems, which were 'solved' with antibiotics. A few months later she had a repercussion and at the time we had ringworm kitties in, so it was thought she possibly had this, we went through a few stressful months with no answer and a range of treatments until I turned to the knowledgeable peeps on this forum and it was suggested she had a systemic yeast infection. She got placed on some antifungal tablets and after two weeks her symptoms cleared up.

At the time it was suggested on a forum that poor diet may be to blame and that she should be moved onto a better quality one, so I put her onto Wainrights, and since then, other than mildly itchy ears, she has been fine, until about 2 weeks ago when she got scratched when we were out walking.

The scratch was just like a normal scab, but instead of healing over and then dropping off, it became an itchy patch and has since not been given the opportunity to heal. Not only that but in the past two weeks an 'odour' has become present not from the dogs ears but just generally, if she gets left in a room the room stinks, and where she lays the bedding stinks, although if you smell her, she doesn't!

Malassezia / yeast infection is on the cards again and she is on combination therapy of ear drops, Malaseb, antifungal cream and antihistamines. However, the vet is pretty adamant its not food related because it started at age 9.5 years, and if it was a food allergy or due to a poor quality diet it would not have reoccured. (She is now 10.5 years old).

I am now starting to wonder if it is an endocrine thing / thyroid problem - which is why managing food is not making any difference.

Anyone have any similar experience?
