I think I'm going to tentatively look into gundog training, so if anyone does have recommendations for reward based fun (?!) gundog trainers in Surrey (Guildford have a Labrador only one- no spaniels 😱) I'd be interested to hear!

Yes I do agility with her- she's fab! Definitely thrives doing something. We've just about done all the equipment too.
I've sent you a pm.

After reading your posts I feel that gundog training would be good for you both in that you will be taught to get Indie hunting for you ;)

Ask any trainer if you can speak to clients that he/she trains any trainer worth their weight in gold will be happy to provide references.

Is she ball obsessed if so play with her with a ball if not get her interested in chasing balls... you are right that with a high driven spaniel you need to keep their minds working finding things around your feet, retrieving balls etc.

I have been reading this post with great interest as Maddie is the 'go off and sniff' type and isn't really interested in doing anything else. Bramble is driven and will eagerly do anything.
I recently did a clicker gun dog weekend with Bramble which was great and have since done some of the exercises with Maddie to try and keep her interested.
I think using the clicker worked well. Unfortunately, there aren't many clicker gun dog trainers around but it may be worth a Google.

Another successful walk yesterday evening. We did find it and fetch almost constantly. Did a few memory retrieves which she wasn't that fussed about. She started to wait for food/ball
To be thrown and then tore through the grass looking for it. Really good. She got distracted once and wasn't responsive, but I probably stayed in the same area a little too long and she got bored. Really have to be on it!

I have to do find and fetch with Bella if I forget her 'throw' I've had it she can be a pain on walks. I have very memorable nightmare episodes imprinted on my brain only a few but enough to make me rarely forget the throw (or ball if its the beach)

She's 6yrs now and has trained me well, she always brings the throw back to my feet but if she's not happy with where I'm stood she drops it at my feet looks at me then picks it up straight away and will wander off a short distance and drop it and get in position for me to hide or throw it again.

We have been to see the gundog trainer this morning.  It was useful to get his thoughts.

I can't generalise here as he was giving me advice on Zac, but he has told me to go back to basics with lead walking, making sure that he keeps his head up all the time  instead of sniffing.  Also go back to basics with recall from short to longer distances just to proof it, and to use a long line until I feel that his recall is good enough that he will come back to me in almost any instance.  He also said it is important to keep Zac away from areas as much as possible where there are very distracting smells until his recall spot on.  However we do have to practice recall in those areas on the long line to help proof it.

Apparently if his head is down then the likelihood is that he isn't listening to me.  I am going to hold a tennis ball in my hand to help get his focus as well as a voice command.

There is so much to think about!!!  I am just about to start reading the good stuff about the actual training in 'Total Recall'.  I am going to try and follow it as best as possible which involves changing my recall command and starting right from scratch. Will keep you posted on this too.

I should add as there has been a lot of comments about this, that the trainer does not agree with harsh methods at all.  He believes that the dog is even less likely to come back to you if you use them.  I completely trust him as he has trained the gundogs of some high profile people that live near us :D
