Puppy arriving Thursday!
« on: December 28, 2013, 09:44:50 AM »
Hi all

I am quite new on here and posted a few weeks back that we had decided on a cocker puppy. Well she is coming to her new home on Thursday!! We have a puppy play pen and soft cage ready for her plus training line, toys and puppy training pads. Would appreciate any tips for puppy's first night or extra equipment you have found useful with your puppy. We have two dachshunds already so we are going to take introductions slowly, make sure they are separated when I'm not in the room etc. any advice and suggestions gratefully appreciated!! Thank you, Sarah x

Sorry, no suggestions but what an exciting time for you.

Can't wait to see some pictures when she arrives.

Good luck.

A supermarket full of kitchen roll for accidents.  :005: enjoy, mines nearly 8 months now. I didn't bother with any expensive blankets or dog beds just cheap things as it all gets ripped up. How exciting. Xx

How exciting Sarah!
We have had our puppy 11 weeks now, we have a doggy hot water bottle that we put in her crate in the evening, have a ticking clock nearby and an old towel with her mummys scent on it.
My sister has a mini daschund, the dogs have met a couple of times and get on ok, early days though, I hope they will become good friends.
PS Bailey prefers to pee on newspaper than training pads, so make sure you have plenty paper in case your puppy is the same.
Good luck
Elaine :)

I second this!! When we first got Hugo we used kitchen roll like it was going out of fashion!!! Cheap beds etc as they will get ripped up yes, he ripped all the stuffing out of his bed so now he sleeps on a doggy pillow (which he tries to hump!)

Thankfully we're back to our normal kitchen roll buying habits as we have no more accidents now and slowly introducing more blankets etc as he knows what he can chew and what he can't now etc.

How exciting!

When we had Blue as a puppy he had a cage plus puppy panels all  round with  newspaper on the floor so he could wee and poo if he needed to go. We had 2 Springers and a cocker who we gradually introduced and they got on fine, that was except for the old cocker who bit him on the nose so he learnt rather quickly to give her some space   :005:

He had his toys in his bed, a very large toy dog that was actually bigger than he was and several smaller cuddly toys which he curled up with when going in his bed. Most where bought at charity shops just made sure none had eyes and bits that he could pull off, cut any off and stitched up the holes.

He settled very quickly, playing in the day, just a short play and then rest but several times and mixed with the others fairly quickly, staying away from the old cocker   :005:

Hope your puppy settles in quickly, enjoy it'll soon grow.

Linda

Lovely!!

As mitches said, forget the puppy pads, just use newspaper.  I also bought a battery childs night light which I found useful to have attached to the crate so that I didnt have to put any bright lights on if I came down at night (and also so that she could find the newspaper) ;)

I found this rather funny, when she is tired she will just nod off wherever she was playing. Sometimes on her toy, Give her time to sleep in a quiet room,
Use a code word when tolite trainning. Our is wee wees, if u do find an accident say nothing. Quick clear up, praise her when she does go in the right place.
And handful of toys. That u rotate every few days so she hasent got them all in one go.
U will get to know her ever need soon enough. And that's a lovely feeling, we've never raised our voice to her, shown aggression and played nicely. At nearly 8 months I'm very proud how happy and loving she is   :D

Also get some white vinegar in, its good diluted and put in a plant spray to take the scent of urine away after an accident.  Some household cleaners just encourages them to go in the same place again.

Thanks for all the replies! Cleaning items at the ready then! We are really excited to get our new girl home, but i had been reading some of the posts on puppies and was feeling a bit daunted especially the stories about play biting. i can't remember our two daxies being too much trouble as pups ( or perhaps I have blocked it out of my memory?!). Your encouraging posts here have helped me feel more positive! Will put some pics up once she arrives.
