Help my cocker is growing a moustache!
« on: January 17, 2014, 10:48:20 AM »
Max is a liver coloured working cocker who is now two and a half. I have always maintained his coat myself, trimming feet and regular brushing. 6 months ago he was neutered so I have been expecting changes and boy have they come!

He now has a very thick woolly coat which I am trying to sort out with a comb and elastic band. I am getting hair out but can't notice much difference at the moment.

He is also growing a moustache!! Long hair on his nose under his eyes!! I don't like it but don't know what to do with it. Have tried combing it and gently pulling and it doesn't want to come out.

I am wondering about clippers. I don't want to take him to a groomers as he is a very nervy dog, but is this something we could do ourselves and if so how.

Any advice on how I should be managing this change in coat would be very welcome as would love to try and get him looking smart again!

You can use clippers on his face or you can use thinning scissors if you are careful. With clippers it will all grow back at the same rate and the same thickness but thinners means it takes some of the bulk out and may appear to take longer to get bushy but its really that the fur has been cut to different lengths. Quickest way is clipping though either number 10 with coat direction or number 7 against coat growth. (I'd go for with coat growth direction for initial attempts.)

Thank you, I don't have any dog clippers at the moment although do have some that my husband bought. Do you think these would work this once until I research doggy ones?
