raw and kibble
« on: March 24, 2014, 07:52:16 PM »
does anyone feed their dog 1 meal of kibble and 1 meal of raw a day or is this a bad idea.   my girl needs to put weight on and I was thinking of doing the above, I know its best not to mix the two in one meal but can I give in separate meals.  thanks.

I mix them , I add raw mince or raw tripe to riley s kibble and he loves it. He is on eden,  a grain free kibble.

I used to feed 1 raw meal and 1 kibble when I was changing William and Louis from kibble to raw. I chose not to mix the two because they are digested at different rates, kibble taking a lot longer to pass through the digestive system than raw and there's the possibility of that causing discomfort or an upset stomach.

Out of curiosity, what do you feed Maisie now and why do you think feeding 1 meal of each will help her to put weight on?

Domino and Prince have raw for breakfast every day, usually lambs' heart or beef chunks with an occasional chicken wing, and kibble for dinner on alternate days (the other dinners are Nature Diet).

They've been on this pattern for the past year and a bit and have had no problems.

Raw tripe is good for putting on weight, but be careful because it has quite a high proportion of fat, which is not always identifiable in the minced product.

There's not a lot of research on this, but you may be interested in this article by the then Director of R&D of Nature's Variety, an American company that sells raw dog food and kibble.

It suggests that there is nothing in the biology of digestion that should cause problems if raw and processed foods are mixed, even in the same meal.

I mix raw with kibble, always have done - with no ill-effects.  I've never found any evidence in literature/ research the validate the claims that it can be harmful.  We eat a variety of foods in the same meal and our systems seem to cope fine.  Don't see why dogs should be that different (particularly as they are superbly adapted scavengers...)

Before going over to raw completely I fed maggie kibble one meal and another meal of either chicken wings or something like naturediet - she did well on that.   Know a number of people who do it that way quite successfully....
