Allergies!
« on: November 30, 2015, 11:31:23 PM »
Hi all
We've had our fantastic little Clover (WCS) for a month now and it's been a whirlwind  :lol2:  As someone previously 'owned' by an unhinged saluki cross she is so much fun and trainable too.  Only problem is my OH and son (aged 4) are both allergic to her! OH not really a problem as he's happy to just use antihistamines when needed, which is fine.  Not so keen to use them long term for youngster though.  Started as hives where any saliva or nose touched skin other than on palms, then a bit of excema which has now mostly gone and now got a very stuffy nose.  Have been told the allergy may well lessen with exposure so just keeping an eye for now.  Does anyone have any experience with this type of allergy and any things that might help e.g. Petal Cleanse or Air purifiers? Thanks

My son had an allergy to eggs when he was a toddler and now he loves nothing more than a boiled egg, so yes there is a good chance that in a matter of time your son will grow out of it.

I'm a life-log sufferer with hay-fever, eczema and other related skin problems.

When the new puppy came my arms and hands flared up.
But it did settle down after a month or so.

Even the "experts" don't understand these conditions very well.
But many have told me "stress"is an important factor.

Since I don't know what stress is, this does not help me.

Mostly these flare ups just disappear after a while. Weird.

My son has been allergic to every dog we have owned but after a couple of months all the symptoms wet away every time. Hopefully the same thing will happen in your household.

You might find that once the puppy fur has gone it will lessen.

Also just be careful of any wormers / flea treatments that you put on your puppy which could cause flare ups.

As already been said, your son might become more immune as time goes on - your OH can always move out  ;) ;)

Well I have asthma and suffer with hay fever and dust allergies - Ollie doesn't help but I can sail through some months outside of hay fever season with nothing then I will get itchy eyes sneezing etc.
Last couple of weeks my eyes have been dreadful and thought about buying drops, instead took tabs for a couple of days and back to normal. I have taken tabs on and off since I was about 15 and still take them as and when.  I do get very stuffy nose at times and find that some allergy tabs  dry you up

I would say that if your son doesn't have a history of allergies he could well settle down - if I get bad I have a really serious clean with Dyson plus hose etc and clean the hep filter before, through the window open, as I can tell when it dust rather than pollen. Also lots of washing hands might help with bacterial wash, the soft hairs off dogs can really stick at edge carpets and travel along wooden floor etc and go under things.  A quick vacuum might not get these.

The worse I have ever been was with a friends long haired cat - not too bad with short haired although my eyes itch and have mild rash/hives if they lean on my arm.

Hope it settles

Hi all
Thanks for the replies  :D yup allergies are strange things! My son also has an egg allergy, which has got milder and he can now tolerate it in baked goods. Hopefully this new allergy will disappear as the symptoms are milder than the egg allergy was. He had eczema as a baby which we put down to the egg allergy and thought he had grown out of it, but actually him 'growing out if it' probably co-incided with the loss of our old dog! My OH though asthmatic had never suffered with allergies till about two years ago when he started reacting to anything and everything (including most alcoholic drinks!) so it was no surprise that he is reacting to the dog, but he's happy to just deal with the symptoms. He's better if he washes his hands straight after playing with or stroking her. Other things we are doing: not allowing Clover upstairs, restricting access to the living room where son and daughter play on the floor, daily hoovering with Dyson, regular damp dusting, regular mopping in kitchen. Didn't expect my house to get cleaner when we got a pup! :005: Plus reminding son to wash his hands frequently. I am hoping that the symptoms especially for son will ease soon, thinking ahead if we don't get much improvement has anyone tried air purifiers or Petal Cleanse?

Hi all
Just bumping this up in case anyone has any more advice? Reactions seemed to have died right down but this evening have just put to bed a little boy with hives over his cheeks and one eyelid plus some wheezing which is new 😔 we did have a visit this afternoon from a friends cocker so maybe the double effect or goodnight cuddles with a pup that had traces of the other dogs saliva on her where they had been playing...

If things have settled down (thankfully) I would probably assume that it is a reaction to the other dog, perhaps might have different fur / doggy shampoo etc  :dunno: :dunno:

If all settled down tomorrow, then that is probably your answer.  If not, has anything else changed that could have triggered todays allergy?  Food / something that your visitor might have been in contact with i.e. cats??

Hope it settles down, mine sometimes gets bad if I have a cold.

You might need to give him a antihistamine for a couple of nights just to get your sons histimine reaction down again.  I know this sounds silly but was it a different type cocker, Ollie texture hair is a bit different than my goldens was, maybe that has something to do with it.....silly I know but my worst reaction in the past was to a ladys long haired cat within 20 min one eye was almost closed ....

It did settle down so I guess he has become desensitised to Clover but had a slightly stronger reaction to our friend's cocker (also a working type) . It does seem to be saliva he reacts to rather than the hair. Also he is spending more time very close to Clover as she is thankfully growing out of the Cockerdile stage! :D

Good news on both counts it would have been awful if you would have had to re home your son :005: x
