Nutriment/Natures Menu - how much to feed?
« on: August 21, 2016, 10:09:14 PM »
We have fed Oscar Nutriment since we brought him home, as that's what's the breeder gave us to take home. We noticed a while back that Natures menu do raw frozen nuggets in bags or the minced stuff. Does anyone know if the Natures menu is just as good? The puppy bag I bought was £3.50, when I went onto the website to calculate how much to feed (by age, 10months and weight 12kg) it said to feed puppy 578g a day.

To me that seems like a lot, currently we feed Oscar 3x85g of Nutriment a day. He will get treats troughout the day during training and a kong in the morning. The vet has never said he is under weight. I'm just wondering now are we under feeding him?

The Nutriment recommendation for puppies is 4 - 6% of bodyweight daily.  At 20 weeks Blue weighs 10.1kg and I currently feed him 450 - 500g Nutriment daily.  I don't give him many treats, just a few very small pieces of sausage for training, and a Chewdles biscuit at bedtime.  He has a raw meaty bone to chew on, which lasts him a week.
If you are concerned, you can always phone or email Nutriment, I have found them very helpful.

This guide is one of the most commonly used and highly recommended ones for raw fed puppies. It's based on their weight and age, with the amount fed gradually decreasing as the puppy matures. http://dogsdinner2.webs.com/feedingpuppies.htm

Nature's Menu do a wide range of raw foods, although some of the nuggets contain rice :dunno: which isn't raw of course. Some also have a low meat content of only around 60%, which in my mind is too low. It always pays to read the labels on Nature's Menus products or check the ingredients on their website. Having said that, I often have a bag of rice free nuggets in the freezer as a standby because they thaw out quickly. Apart from that I don't use Nature's Menus nuggets but I use their pure meat blocks and the bags of free flow tripe mince.

I can't really comment on feeding Nutriment apart from when I tried my two on it Louis liked it but William didn't and it consistently gave him a mildly upset stomach, regardless of which variety he had. I've not fed it since, but William seems to have been an exception rather than the norm.

Yes, they have more when they are puppies.  Mollie only has 290g a day now.  Nutriment or Natural Instinct are better than Natures Menu.

Nutriment/Natures Menu - how much to feed?

Nutriment and Natural instinct are very similar as the owners of the former founded the latter before leaving.

Natures Menu has too much bone and too little meat as a %.

Regarding feeding %, I'd always recommend feeding the puppy (or dog) in front of you. If I fed my puppy more than 6% he'd be a balloon, yet the raw forums were recommending around 10% [emoji15].

We moved from Nutriment (who were very helpful) to The Dogs Butcher purely because of the mince being a lot coarser (being half the price for the same quality helped too).  That said, I'd only recommend TDB if you have at least a couple of dogs as they come in 1kg bags - that lasts a day with a Cocker Puppy and a Welsh Springer.
