Really sorry to read that Penny is unwell Joan - hope she improves quickly

We discovered today that Purdey (on antibiotics for a skin condition) loves banana and will happily take her tablet in a small piece......might be worth a try

Sorry to hear Penny's poorly. A trick a vet gave me once, was to open the mouth, and drop the tablet on the back of the tongue, hold the mouth shut again and stroke the dog's throat in a downward direction. It obviously depends on the dog and how comfortable she is with you handling her, I certainly wouldn't force it but it used to work with my old dog, who would eat the sausage and then spit the tablet out!!! After a bit of practice, it was a pretty quick procedure but if you can get her to take banana or something similar, better still!! Best of luck, hope she's better soon!

I used bizzylizzy's method as Henry can ALWAYS spot a pill in food, no matter how well disguised and will eat around it. Quick drop the pill as far down the back of the mouth as possible, then gently hold mouth closed and stroke the throat. I do it standing over Henry so he is looking up at me with his head back. Another tip the vet gave me is that when you let go of their mouth, if they lick their lips it means they have swallowed the pill and aren't holding it in their mouth ready to spit out! I have years of practice doing this with my sneaky cats who will pretend to swallow then walk a few steps and spit the pill out.

yes, they can be very sneaky with pills. I found the best way with Beau was to make him sit looking up at a tasty treat, then as he opened his mouth to take it I dropped the pill in there from the other hand and followed immediately with the treat. Greedy little blighter had to swallow the pill then  :D

I use the three treat trick. Have three pieces of whatever treat you can use - put the pill in the second treat but keep, the other two uncontamminated. Give the fist, unsuspicious morsal. Follow immediately with the second, complete with pill and immediately give the third. They are usually so keen on getting to the final treat that they have swallowed the second without even noticing that anything was hidden inside.  ;) Works every time with Archie.
