Lactol for puppies
« on: August 28, 2006, 12:36:19 PM »
Just met a friend of mine who breeds and was telling her about my new pup coming to live with us. She said she feeds all her pups 'lactol' for at least the first 6 months. Wondered whether anyone else does this or recommends it? Must admit I didnt do that when I got my my first pup but can remember him having 'Ambrosia creamed rice'.........lovely smelling kisses from him after that but very sticky!!!

Any advice would be appreciated!

Your dog is your friend, partner & defender. You are his life, love & leader. He will be yours, faithful & true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

SIX months ?!!!!!!  noooo way.
Once a puppy is weaned from it's mum, it no longer needs milk, full stop.

I agree. There's no need to give Lactol unless there is a medical reason. Some puppies/dogs can't tolerate any milk in volume, but many will like some in rice or a bit of tea etc - but there's rarely a need for it to be given as a specific feed or drink.

Lactol is usually given to the puppies once the mother has stopped feeding them and then they give the puppies dry puppy food which needs to be soaked

I don't give our pups milk once Mum has stopped feeding them - they don't need it once they're weaned. I think in years gone past it was common for breeders to recommend milky feeds for pups long past the weaning stage on the basis it would help produce good bone but I think this is a bit of an old wives tale ;)
