Eating own poo

Hi. Probably sounds a siily thing to ask!! :huh: My 11 week old puppy eats her poo!!!! She does her business and then turns around & starts eating it. I have read that this can happen but how can i stop her doing it??? The other thing is that she has got very good going for a wee outside then coming in and pooing. The eating of it is no different if she is out or in though!When we're out she sniffs other dogs poos(as they do) but doesn't eat it! You must think this very odd to ask but i would like to sort it!? :huh: :huh: :huh: Sorry to ask a silly question. Jenny

It's not a silly question at all, coprophagia (poo eating) is fairly common in dogs but obviously it is not a pleasant habit. There are quite a few threads on here about this and ideas of ways to stop it. Basically the best one is to distract her as soon as she has done the deed then lift it as quickly as possible. Other things include putting pineapple on her food which can dissuade some dogs or there are things you can buy at the pet shop which make it taste nasty... well nastier!  :005:

It could be worse though, some dogs eat other dog's poo as well as their own!  ph34r :005:

Hi Michele. have read the thread you gave me. At least i'm not alone!I will persevere with her. I try to pick it up as soon as she has gone but i will try the treat to get her to come to me straight away. Thankyou for the advice. Will let you know how it goes. Jenny
