BARF - dividing frozen food
« on: January 31, 2008, 02:12:48 PM »
OK, sorry for the possibly misleading title but basically the pet supplies does large bags of frozen mince for 75p (not sure of the exact quantity but at least 2 wks worth) it's the odds and ends from the butcher which is opposite and used to infact sell it so I'm confident it's good stuff and smells meaty as opposed to the pre-pack blocks that smell like plastic and miss fussy pants won't touch.

The problem is it is in one large lump, now had it for ages and gone back to 'Tesco value free flow' as it is so difficult to cut up. I did use a little hack saw but trying to cut up the frozen slippery meat without taking a finger off was nigh on impossible.

Does any one have any tips for dividing it into portions once frozen. I assume I can't defrost and re-freeze. A hot knife doesn't really touch it either.

I had a similar issue with the frozen block being too big a quantity but could get through them with a saw or chuck the little bit that I felt had been defrosted too long.

Am I asking an impossible question or is the answer staring me in the face??

I use a cleaver and a hammer (actually I tend to use a rolling pin as the hammer but that's just cos I can't be bothered to go digging around for the hammer). It's pretty effective - I used this method to chop up some frozen kidneys that the butcher gave me yesterday.  :D

I have used a small wood axe for bones, so that might work for you. Just don't get a frozen meat chip in your eye. That might take some explaining in casualty!

I just bash it a bit with a rolling pin (in fact, it's the only thing I use a rolling pin for!)  :D

Actually when I got the saw I felt rather uncomfortable asking oif he thought it's get through frozen meat and bine  ph34r  :005: It's actually a 'dry wall' saw   what ever that is.

Shall try bashing it with the heat hammer thing.  ;) Thanks

I would try bashing it with a rolling pin - in a really strong bag - first!

Otherwise, you need to invest in one of those electric knives - they usually come complete with a pair of blades for frozen meat!  :D

I get all of my pent up aggression and anger and psych myself up then bash like hell with a rolling pin or drop it hard on the floor. HTH :005:
