Meeting people on walks
« on: February 14, 2008, 05:14:20 PM »
Hi, Barney is now 12 weeks, doing really well, and loving his walks. However, every single person, dog or bike we meet he barks and pulls and seems desperate to say hello, I have tried making myself more interesting, treats, praise and games but he will not be distracted.

I know he is very young and this could be the cause but it is very difficult bcause he whines for them for some time after they have passed!

Anyone else had this, is it a phase or does it continue? Any tips?

No tips but Poppy is just the same - she thinks everybody has to say hello to her and just when you think she is going to walk by nicely she launches herself and complete strangers  ph34r

Have to be "on guard" at this point as I'd be mortified if she put muddy footprints on people (She has done this before as well  ph34r).

Unfortunatly Poppy is 8 months old and is showing some signs of calming but its a slow process.....  (I'll be keeping an eye on this for any tips myslef.....)  The only thing that works is if I literally waft a really (and it has to be top draw) really nice treat in front of her nose and then she may take note  :005:

Hey at least they are a friendly buch of doggies!!

Molo spent the first 12 months of his life under the mis-apprehension that anything with 2 or 4 legs would automatically be his best friend  ::) ::)

I tried to ensure that he wasn't rewarded for this behaviour; I would ask people who wanted to say hello to wait for me to give him permission, first - he has grown out of it and ignores people now  ;)

Same here. Cody thinks that anything that moves should make a fuss of him. When he was a baby our postwoman (who has a cocker herself) made the mistake of fussing him. Now any person remotely dressed in post uniform is expected to do the same. Cody gets so excited when he sees a post person walk up our drive then so disappointed when they walk back down. I have also had the muddy paws on clean trousers, most people don't mind, I think they are just mesmerized by all the cocker love! Cody is 7 months and shows no signs of growing out of this.

Daisy is just the same, but when someone does go to say hello to her she then backs off like she is scared

We did a bit of training for this in class last week with other dogs and people. We walked towards the "target" and if our dog started pulling towards them then we turned round quickly and walked the other way back to our spot we started in. Then repeated it til we could get to the person without beiing pulled. You can put in a few sit commands along the way. The dog realises eventually that the only way to get to what they want whether it is a dog or a person is to walk calmly on a loose leash. You will look anti-social but your training must continue out and about :005: You can also set up dummy situations with friends and there dogs ;)

Interesting and i think i will try this.  Our class trainer always demonstrates with a larger dog ( not hard compared to Izzy) but the bending down and rewarding a dog that stays in the "leg zone" is really hard when you are walking with a midgit gem   >:(

Yep Shadow is exactly the same he is nearly 7 months now and thinks everything and everryone is on this earth to simply love fuss and play with him.  No sign of it calming down yet either, I try to distract him when we see others but he is very good at a two back legged waltz which he must think will get him there a bit quicker. Any tips from others greatly apreciated
