I too wondered about the staples without anaesthetic.... it must have hurt like hell.
She keeps trying to lick her wound now (although when it was stitches, she didn't even need the lampshade collar after a couple of days) Might have to put lampshade back on, but she really, really hates it and because of where the wound is I feel it does a lot of harm too as every time she bashes into anything, it rubs on the wound....
Maybe see if I could put her coat on her if it doesn't make her too hot?  None of our tee shirts would be small enough for her...

What a brave little girl Buffy is.  My last cocker, Sophie, had stitches for something once and they opened up.  I rushed her to the Vet, where she hated going and cried all the way in the car with me promising that I wasn't going to leave her and I would stay with her.  They decided to staple the  wound and insisted on taking her away from me to do it.  To say she screamed the place down was an understatement.  I was in pieces in the waiting room, crying to the receptionist that I had promised I wouldn't leave her and 'just listen to her'.  She flew into my arms when they brought her back.

Buffy was very brave and I really hope the wound heals properly this time and she is soon fully recovered.

Thanks for your replies.
Harriet and Buffy seem fine now  ;) I am probably incredibly over-cautious with them, but they seem absolutely back to normal with each other.  We are very careful with them when food is around - Buffy is crated safely before food is around because I don't want any of the others to get over -enthusiastic near her.  Josie wants to lick her all the time, and Buffy is just her usual happy self.  She is a bit miffed that she doesn't come out for walks with the rest of the gang - she goes by herself at the moment - but apart from that, she seems fine in herself.  No longer scared of the others, or of Harriet at all.
I will find my tape measure tomorrow and order a soft collar for her - in the meantime we are keeping an eye on her and she seems to have stopped worrying at the staples.  She has had so many stitches in her little life, she seems to take it all in her stride.  None of our other dogs would be as good as she is about all this - she takes her anti biotics and lets me squirt the pain killer straight into her mouth from the syringe the vet gave me, she really is an angel  :luv:
Will let you know what the vet says after I speak to them tomorrow.

Have spoken to the vet today and she needs to keep the staples in for 3 weeks!!!!
He agrees either a soft blow up collar or maybe a doggie tee shirt to keep her from licking it - tonight it has started weeping a bit so trying not to panic about her.  She is on antibiotics and still has some pain killers left too.
Trev just took her out for a little walk on lead and she didn't stop wagging her tail the whole time - but it made the wound bleed a bit more.....
Will clean her up and leave her quiet for the rest of the evening now.

Poor girl, hope she heals quickly  :luv:

She was brave, i remember when my retriever Bracken had a major cancer op a few yrs back the vet removed the stitches and within an hour it was wide open  :o so we got him in the car and my OH held him whilst the vet stapled over half the circumference of his stomach, I couldn't believe it but he never made a sound. He got a huge treat afterwards  :luv:

get well soon Buffy :luv: :luv:
